....by Bruce Pandolfini
Position 4:
Bobby Fischer-Joaquim Durao
Havana,1966
White's 33rd move....
[D]2nrkb2/5p2/1pr1p1pp/p1p1P3/P1N1NPP1/1RP4R/1P2K2P/8 w - - 0 1
Solution:33.Nxa5!,four of the black's pieces are in defensive positions
along the back rank and Fischer immediately exploites the situation....
After 33....bxa5 34.Nf6+ Ke7 35.Rb7+ and we have mate in two moves....
A brilliant sacrifice to say the least....
P.S.Come on Robin, don't tell me you saw that coming

If you tell Robin (or any strong player) that there is a combination in this position (i.e. it comes from Fisher's "best" moves... ) I'm 100% certain he'll find it in a few seconds at most... you underestimate humans Doc I believe... This is a know pattern executed in a rather simple and straightforward way. No chances he will miss this.

Yes, a known and straightforward pattern. In fact just a slight variation on the pattern from position #3.... a deflection (this time the b-pawn) in order to produce a rook+knight mate. Perhaps the good Dr. Deeb has been hoodwinked by the book title? So far there has been absolutely nothing "outrageous" in any of the solutions.Marc MP wrote:This is a know pattern executed in a rather simple and straightforward way.

Crafty finds Nxa5 instantly, but does not find any mate... eval = +3.5

I should have been more clear. There is no mate if Black doesn't capture the knight, it is a sham sacrifice that simply wins material against best defense.bob wrote:Crafty finds Nxa5 instantly, but does not find any mate... eval = +3.5

I am aware of the pattern issue and when presenting the position on a silver plate and telling the readers there is a combination,it's not too hard to figure out the winning move,but....can they do it in OTB game, under tournament conditions, and most importantly, can they reach such a position so that they can make their winning and according to Robin trivial moveMarc MP wrote:Dr. Deeb,Dr.Wael Deeb wrote:....by Bruce Pandolfini

I don't think so and this goes especialy when playing a top chess engine on a decent hardware, now here where I underestimate the humans....
