How fast are new computer systems with chess!

Here you can look to my speed test on heavy systems like the new Nehalem - i7 core ,Gainestown,Skulltrail...

What Motherboard did you use to install 2 Nehalem ?

Seems like a fast Sulltray may still be faster than the Nehalem.

Lets also see how we can OC the Nehalem.

Also does Toga scale good when going up to 16 CPU.

Maybe the numbers under Fritz benchmark would be even more interesting.

The tests with the Nehalem and Gainestown is done by someone out Taiwan.
The cpu's are ES, he is totally not interested in chess, but was kind enough to do this simple test for me!

Nehalem will be faster then a skulltrail at the same clock speed!!

Like you say ,it depends how well he will overclock.

8 or 16cpu don't scale very well..it doesn't matter for this speed test,it's shows how fast they are...programs will be more optimized when the systems are in daily use for everyone.

Fritz Benchmark..ok yes ,but i like more real chess calculatings,to see how deep they go,in what time, how many nodes.s with the same engine, and so on...10-20years later i can compare them with the analyses i get then..

Could he test with Zappa Mexico II ?

that would give a good indication.

You said a Nehalem 4 Core (8 with HT) will be faster than a skulltray 8 CPU ?

Code: Select all

1) TogaII142JD-8cpu 21/46 03:46 208.317.723 7.345.841 +0,26 Skulltrail 2xQX9775 @4.2Ghz DDR2: 4-5-5-17
2) TogaII141SE-16cpu 21/45 03:30 94.511.341 6.843.413 +0.22 Gainestown 2xNehalem @3.07Ghz DDR3: 9-9-9-24
3) TogaII142JD-16cpu 21/46 03:59 96.988.402 6.521.362 +0.26 Gainestown 2xNehalem @2.93Ghz DDR3: 8-8-8-19
16cpu Nehalem @3GHz 10% slower than 8cpu Skulltrail @ 4.2GHz ---> why is this impressive?

I use only freeware sofware! Arena+TogaII ,could use also Glaurung...
The most off them don't know chess,so i have to send the files to them with a explenation how to setup...

Zappa Mexico II ,or Naum,Rybka would be very nice to test...but they are not for free..so it's not possible for me to test these engines...but the test will be almost the same..Zappa Mexico will gain more from the cores, but the compare with other computer systems will be in the same order...i have start with TogaII so i have to continue with the same engine on all different systems.
I'am waiting when they come in retail (i7 core) ,and will ask people again to do my test.

For now i should find somebody with a Skulltrail system who wants to run the test at the same clock speed as the Nehalem @2.93Ghz,
then we have a directly idea if the Nehalem is faster then a Skulltrail system!
Now the results i have is the Nehalem at least 1Ghz lower clocked and is already very close to a Skulltrail..so,i'am almost sure he gonne be faster!

Hi ernest,

Nehalem is still a quad core cpu,so 2 x 4 =8cores + with HT on = 2 x8threads
so the chess engines see it as a 16cpu !

Nehalem 10% slower (it's 7,3418%) but his speed is 36,81% lower then the Skulltrail @4.2Ghz!!

OK! But since it is not obvious if HT will help chess, how much do you get without HT?

Look in my list...but i don't have it from the Gainestown

5) TogaII142JD-8cpu 21/46 03:54 172.582.215 5.891.624 +0.30 Nehalem @ 2.93Ghz
12) TogaII142JD-4cpu 21/50 04:47 164.070.553 4.562.555 +0.24 Nehalem @2.93Ghz HT off (cpu 50%)

Here i see a gain +29,13%

13) TogaII142JD-4cpu 21/52 03:48 260.594.079 4.556.842 +0,23 Q6600 g0 @ 3.2Ghz (My PC) DDR2: 5-5-5-15

OK, so if HT doesn't help, Nehalem is only 10% better than Q6600...
