What are the most popular (free/non-free) UCI engines?

Post by ChessPadMark »

I want to test a number of UCI chess engines with ChessPad, but I don't have a clue which UCI engine(s) I should test with. Can anyone list a number of the popular free engines ?

Thanks,
Mark

Don't know what you mean by popular engines. But here are some:

Rybka 1, 2
Stockfish
Bright
Crafty

Maybe it would help if you can say _what_ you want to test. If its just playing strength it may be a good idea to save time and electric energy and take a look at the CCRL and CEGT websites.

If you like to test if and how good the playing strength of the engine is adjustable to a human opponent it may be a very good idea to forget about UCI and xboard and take crafty in.

Several UCI engines such as SOS, Anmon and Spike come with Arena (http://www.playwitharena.com). Spike is pretty strong.

Arasan (http://www.arasanchess.org) supports Winboard and UCI too.

the best -- http://rybkachess.com/index.php?auswahl=Demo+version

rybka 3 is much stronger, & a truly amazing engine, but it will set you back a pretty penny.

I just want to see if the engines function normally.

Thanks for your answers. I will download arena, and use the engines that it installs too.
