here Rybka played Rd1+, which is winning, although other moves such as a5 are probably sufficient, too.

Arasan will switch to Rd1 eventually although it takes over 3 minutes. I tried Crafty 23.0 too but Crafty prefers a5 at least for several minutes.

Arasan's analysis:

"LearningLemming-Rybka, WCRCC 2009" bm Rd1+

result: Rd1+ score: +1.79 ++ solved in 204.17 sec. (431.23M nodes)
Rd1+ Bxd1 Rxd1+ Kg2 Rd4 Qh3 Be4 Qg4 Bf5 Qxf5 exf5 Nxd4 Bxd4 c6 Bb6 Rc4

result(2): a5 score: +1.25 ** not solved in 3600.14 secs. (

a5 Qf4 e5 Qc1 e4 Ne1 Bg5 Qb2 Be7 Qc1 Be8 Ng2 Rxc5 Rac3 Rxc3 Rxc3 Qe5 Nf4 Bd7 Rc7

result(3): Rf5 score: +1.32 ** not solved in 3600.07 secs. (

Btw. Rybka's score for Rd1+ is over +2.

I am still searching for a bug that makes Ancalagon crash in the last testposition from Robert Basham, but this one does not look so difficult:

are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Your hw is a lot faster than mine. I'm on a quad not 8 cpu.

probably MP variance, which can sometimes be extreme. on the rybka forum i was able to find a move in 20 minutes that someone with a quad did not find in 4 hours analysis of a CC game.

here rybka is very fast but not as a amazing as eelco's engine (which found this instantly!?)

Post by BubbaTough »

Just for giggles I put this into LearningLemming. It plays this move in 1 minute 55 seconds at a depth of 17 on 1 thread 2.66 ghz core 2 duo. Now if only it could get this position against Rybka (instead of the other way around) life would be good.

Its interesting to see engines take a while on this, because I would expect most mediocre human chess masters to play this move, even in somewhat rapid time controls.

Thanks John... Probably there was quite a bit of luck involved that Ancalagon did not lose the thread here after the first plies. Stockfish for instance does not play the move at all anymore after four plies in single-PV mode 8-)

I wanted to check whether after

[FEN "3r2k1/p1q2pp1/2b1pb1p/2Pr4/6Q1/R4NP1/P1R1BP1P/6K1 b - -"]

1... Rd1+ 2. Bxd1 Rxd1+ 3. Kg2 *

3...Qe5 was also possible and Stockfish does confirm this is good in multi-PV mode, but probably selectively prunes some of the best moves after Rd1, which is a problem for Ancalagon as well in other cases. 21... Nxe4 by Nakamura against Beljavsky is still completely unfindable :(

1... Rd1, not found in Learning Lemming - Rybka by Stockfish 1.4
