When interesting play becomes more important than strength.

Post by Robert Flesher »

I lost my favourite chess engine to play against (Deep Junior 7.0). However, yesterday I replaced it with Rebel 12 from Lokasoft. I could not be more pleased. Perhaps it is not the elo monster Rybka, or Naum is, but it sure destroys me. (approx 2000-2100 elo). To me is seems to play in a style like no other, yet close to Deep Junior 7.0. Very aggressive, go for the throat chess. An example : Kasparov vs Deep Junior
the famous .......Bxh2! position

Robert, Michael Reyes once posted he is a big fan of Junior 7 too. Since the engine is no longer available and you simply lost your legal copy of the engine maybe he could help you? Or maybe one of the Junior authors, Amir Ban or Shay Bushinsky will read your request or you could contact them through this board, that would be the preferable way of getting you a new copy!

Regards, Eelco

Michael Reyes wrote in a thread about attacking engines
Here's my list:

Intuitive-Sacrificial-Artistic Group (more tendency to sacrifice pieces; or play with an attractive, entertaining style)

1) Junior 7 - I'm obviously a fan of this version. Can't say enough about Junior 7.
2) CSTAL2 - Never fails to entertain me.
3) Glaurung 1.2.1 / Glaurung 2.1 - I think Glaurung is like a Junior 7 on steroids. Where Junior 7 failed in strength, Glaurung delivered.

Aggressive Group (shows a relentless attacking style; might sacrifice something here or there sometimes; as demanded by the position)

1) Gandalf - Quite aggressive, and has a tendency also to find deep sacs quickly, like in the Rotlevei-Rubinstein game.
2) The King engine - by itself, it is one aggressive engine. Some personalities are worthy of having their own separate executables like the LOGAN personality (drawmaster) and the Marshall Personality (likes to play coffeehouse style chess. More of a cheap shot style not found in other engines. Very good against humans.
3) Gambit Tiger 1 and 2 (since its code has predilection to attack the enemy King, I often see Gambit Tiger play towards the kingside.
4) WChess - back then WChess was rated as the most aggressive engine on the planet (I think somewhere around 1997-1998). I made loose backups of Computer Chess on the net before and I recall having seen a graph showing WChess as the most aggressive, while Genius the most Solid.
5) Thinker 5.1 Passive - from its few games I saw, I'd say we have a tiger here.
6) HIARCS - HIARCS is the top engine which besides improving playing strength, also maintains a very fresh and entertaining style every time an upgrade comes along.
7) MChess - Rated as the second most aggressive engine in the retro list I mentioned. From the games it played, I'd say they were right about its style.
8) Fritz 2 - Some people claim that Fritz 2 was the wildest Fritz of them all.
9) Virtual Chess 2 - play against it even on 1sec/move and you'd conclude that it is one very aggressive anti-human chess program. It's use of computer tactics is very instructive. It is a nightmare to play against. If you want to study the clever use of tactics against humans, this is a good bet. I find it harder to play blitz against Virtual than Shredder or Chess Tiger 14. It was the engine which scored the most points against humans in the Harvard Cup of 1995, gaining as performance rating of 2680.

I have contacted chessbase, they are only trying to sell me Deep Junior 10, I purchased it already the first day it was available. To bad Ed did not make Deep Rebel 13.0. On 8 threads Rebel would take some scalps for sure!

I have bright, very tactical engine, but it seems confused(positionally), almost to chaotic. I prefer Deep Junior 7.0 and now Rebel 12 because they often sac material based on attack possibilities that other engines do not even consider. There is no easy draw! Try to lock the position with Rebel , he will take it personal. Then soon after you will see the sac of one or several minor pieces to smash you happy fortress. This is if you manage to even get one. I prefer to avoid bad chess ideas like that, but it good to know Rebel can deal with them.

If Amir e-mailed me tommorrow, I'd pay full price again for Deep Junior 7.0. Until then I can only hope maybe Ed will get bored and release Deep Rebel 13.0. :)

If I can find my old OEM Deep Junior 7 I will mail you it. I no longer have the manual or case for it however. I keep my CDs in binders.

Thanks for the interesting comments regarding Rebel 12 :D
I have Rebel 12.00.01 but unfortunately it doesn't work under the Arena GUI and Windows XP x64
I tried to install it as a winboard and as a UCI engine via the adapter, but no joy....it doesn't fire up....
Any hints will be much appreciated....

If I ever see a "Deep Rebel" I would puke. It is already bad enough to see "Deep" attached to Junior, Fritz, etc. It really shows a lack of imagination and a silly marketing move to make it look like "Deep" blue. But, the point of my post is that for Rebel, there is be a much better name for it!

"Rebel Gang" 8-)
