I am feeling ill

Post by Michael Sherwin » Sat Nov 28, 2009 6:02 am

I think that I have contracted the Hippo flu!

Lets start at the beginning. And work our way forward.

Code: Select all

A) Fruit 2.1

B) Rybka 1.0 beta
   1) suspicion of cloning Fruit
      a) Vas claims that he took many ideas from Fruit
      b) various code and data snippets given as evidence
         1) most were from unimportant sections of Fruit
      c) some evidence that the eval was very similar
         1) except material imbalance tables were added.
   2) was rewritten using bitboards so at worst it is a derivation
      a) accusation changed to plagiarism and GPL violation
   3) possible wrong doing by Vas ignored by most
      a) Rybka strongest engine in the world
      b) lack of forth coming proof

C) Strelka
   1) suspicion of cloning Rybka 1.0 beta
      a) almost exact play and strength
      b) Vas said it was a clone
         1) tried to claim source as own
   2) Jury says not a clone of Rybka
      a) used same approach as Vas
         1) used Fruit as base
         2) translated to bitboards
         3) added material imbalance tables from Rybka 1.0 beta
            - Vas said to use Rybka 1.0 beta anyway we wanted
   3) Done to show us exactly how Vas wrote Rybka 1.0 beta
      a) a derivation from Fruit
   4) Dann Corbit concludes that Strelka is not a clone of Rybka
      a) he misses the Fruit connection
   5) Michael Hoffman concludes that Strelka is not a clone of Rybka
      a) he misses the Fruit connection

D) Newer version of Rybka rewritten to separate functions for white/black
   1) some claim that a simple hex editor shows this
   2) Jury Osipov claims this for Rybka 3

E) Ippolit comes out and is said to be a clone of Rybka
   1) evidence for cloning
      a) Vas said so
         1) claims it as his code that was stolen
      b) Osipov said so
         1) Ippolit has separate functions for white/black like Rybka
   2) conflicting evidence for cloning
      a) Vas says that it is stolen Rybka 3
      b) Jury Osipov says that it is Rybka 4
         1) promotion plot for Rybka 4 by Vas
   3) hard evidence for cloning
      a) None presented
         1) Graham Banks says that there is some
            - by trusted programmers, but he can not divulge their names
   3) evidence for derivation
      a) Apparently started from Kaissa
         1) Ippolit site implies this, as Kaissa is first listed
         2) Authors familiar with Kaissa claim it has same bugs
      b) It is arguably stronger than Rybka
      c) not as complete as Rybka
      d) is better at end games than Rybka
      e) is slightly worse in the middle game than Rybka
I hope that there are not many mistakes or important omissions in this very sketchy outline. If so I hope that it can be improved and used as a basis for further meaningful and productive discussion. Maybe a more detailed, correct and complete outline can help people to argue their point of view more intelligently and with better logic.

Please help me to get over my Hippo flu. As things are, I am really feeling quite ill from all this.
I hate if statements. Pawns demand if statements. Therefore I hate pawns.

I think that you should take the following into account too.

When are the Robberlite "authors" going to give their real names?
Actually, probably more relevant is why won't they give their real names?

a. Roberto Pescatore (italian-english = Robert Fisher)
b. Yakov Petrovitch Golyadkin (or Yakov Petrovich Golyadkin ) - is a main character in the novella "The Double: A Petersburg Poem" written by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The motif of the novella is a doppelgänger. In the vernacular, the word "doppelgänger" refers to any double or look-alike of a person. I may think they are implying something here!
c. Igor Igoronov Igorovich or just "IGOR" (YGOR) for short maybe refers to their most trusted/reliable "assistant" as in the animated film "Igor" or any fictional character we know in films using such name - horror movies and the like.

On the other hand there is a possibility that some incredibly talentented and creative genius has been working surreptitiously on a chess engine, and has finally decided to put all his years of hard work as source code for everyone to enjoy. This genius though, unfortunately seems to lack the programming ability in avoiding elementary bugs such as time management or pondering or MP ability etc ... yet he is able to write evaluation and search code that is a generation ahead of all chess engine programmers on his first try.

Apparently this genius has the ability to create obscure code so complex that to less gifted chess programmers it looks like it is machine generated code. This genius is also not proud of his ground breaking achievements, and thus presents the code without revealing his real name.

There are many possibilities why they (he?) don't give their (his) real name.

If he wants to protect himself, he could just use a faked name.

So there is probably another reason, not related to the question "clone or not"

Maybe: Hate against capitalism - Fooling the capitalists - Trying to make us believe a socialistic collective is superior to capitalism - Last, but not so unlikely as it sounds: psychical problems, no friends, shizophrenia...

A daring statement for someone who posts first on every Ippo-thread.

I am still trying to get a factual discussion.

Really? I can only see that I replied first in this thread out of all the Ippo/Robbo threads on this page. And that's a fact!
