Thanks Jim !

For this release diff stats from 1.7.1 says:

39 files changed, 2165 insertions(+), 2434 deletions(-)

So more then 250 lines of code removed form previous version, especially in search.cpp

There are no big new features, mainly code shuffle and cleanups, of course we expect an ELO increase, but this time we are quite confident
it will be smaller then last time ;-)

We spent more then 3 weeks just to regression test all the patches, and this has somewhat slowed down the development.

As usual many thanks to Jim for his great job in compiling SF and also we would like to thank people that contributed with patches and tests to this version (hope I have not forgot someone):

- Ralph Stoesser
- Marek Kwiatkowski
- Shaun Brewer
- Konstantin Orfenov
- Frank Quisinsky
- Jörg Oster
- Richard Lloyd
- Vratko Polák
- Øystein Johansen
- J. Wesley Cleveland

A special thanks to David Dahlem to allow us to use one of his great logos as the official one you'll find in the package.

Have fun
SF Team

is it my imagination, or does this climb depths even -faster- than 1.7??? haven't done a head 2 head yet, & i don't use stockfish a lot yet either, but this is ridiculous. i ran a stock 3ghz single core & hit depth 25 from the start position in a almost exactly one minute (59 seconds). waiting to see if there is significant relative slowdown after or around there but it appears not...d27 at 4 minutes now. what. the. hell.

I am having a problem when the cores are set to 8,the engine freezes on me.Plays fine at 4 and 6 cores on my i7 920 with HT on.Had no problems with the 1.7 series regarding setting at 8 cores though it is virtual due to HT on(Can't disable to Ht off)

I noticed the same thing. I'm not sure it's a problem though. I am guessing the already very selective search is now more selective and thus prunes away stuff faster than before to allow greater search "depth" to be achieved. The big question is: does it work and make the engine play better chess? I'm confident the developers and testers believe the answer is yes -- more testing in engine vs engine matches (since humans have no chance anymore against any of the top engines) will tell.

Whoa, this was really unexpected. Nearly gave me a heart attack when I saw the thread. :P

I thought you guys wouldn't be releasing for a while due to a regression. Good to see that turned around so fast. ;)

Awesome, and I hope we get some good strength gains. Look out R4!
