HTC HD2 with Android or Windows 6.5 Chess Programs

Post by AdminX » Wed Sep 15, 2010 12:38 am

Hi,

I Just ordered two HTC HD2 mobile phones. The phone comes with Windows Mobile 6.5, but I am thinking about placing Android 2.2 on it instead. What are good Chess apps for each OS?

Thanks in advance

I found and app called "DroidFish Chess" which they say is a port of "Stockfish 1.8".

Also just located ChessGenius for Android, so I guess they will do for now.

I have an HTC HD2 and have been thinking of installing the Android since I'm not very satisfied with the Windwos Mobile software. Do you think the Android version will be stable ? As far as I understand it is just an unofficial port and still in the developement stage.

It would be wonderful with Android and Stockfish !

I read that Android 2.2 "Froyo Build" is pretty stable. You can dual boot to be safe and run it from your SD card. Yes, it is still in the developement stage, but as I understand things, it is near completion and there are just a few minor bugs. There are very good installation directions on the XDA website.

I feel it is redundant to ask is android is more stable than windows mobile. Android is based on a tested linux kernel which is tightly inspected and reviewed by the community. There is no doubt in my mind about the superiority of embedded linux over windows mobile. I have an android phone and had a few win mobile phones in the past and can definitely vouch for system stability which I could not do with the win mobile phones. With win mobile phones, I had to reboot several times to fix phone and other issues, never had to do this with the android. I really would not consider the win mobile platform again unless there are drastic changes.

Note that I am on android 2.1 and am talking about the android platform in general, not about a specific version.

For chess software, droidfish is reasonable. It is missing some features such as the ability to annotate games and the touch interface is not as polished as some of the other apps. I have chess genius for the android, which has a much better GUI but does not support variations. My feeling is that this space will get better even though droidfish is not currently as good as ceboard feature wise.

My HTC HD chess programs are:

- Shredder
- PF4
- ChessGenius
- Majestic Chess
- CT-Art
- Chess Endings

I have all the chess I need in the pocket. It's fantastic!
I'm happy with Windows Mobile 6.5, but I hardly use the HD for other things (except listen to music, and like a phone).

Maybe you can install Android in one of them and compare. Two units ... :o
