TEST position TCEC5- Houdini 1.03a-DRybka4 1-0

Post by beram »

This Semi-slav opening position arose in Houdini 1.03a – DeepRybka4 64 in the TCEC5 tournament
[D] r1b2rk1/2qn1ppp/p1p1pn2/1p4N1/3PP3/2N5/PPQ1BPPb/R1B2R1K b - - 0 13

Most programs favor 13. ..c5 as best for black. Rybka in stead played h6 at depth 20
After the moves 14. Nf3 – Bf4 15 e5 – Bxc1 16 Raxc1 – Ne8 17 Ne4 black wasn’t able to play for the c5 break anymore. And despite his material plus, he was gradually being outplayed because of the well known badly placed c8-bishop.
The difference in evals between the two programs (despite being regarded so closely related… ) where for a long time (moves13-43) very big (in the given position -0.14 for black according to Rybka, while 0.30 better for white after 14 Nf3 according to Houdini) this difference in evals continues till move 43 (!) where this position occured

[D] b1qr1rkn/6p1/p1p1p2p/NpNnPp1Q/1P1P1P2/P2R2P1/4B3/6KR b - - 0 42

most programs eval this attacking position for white as very good for white (besides Houdini (+0.82 depth 25),also Stockfish and Fritz12 give more than half a pawn better for white) but after 43. ..Ng6 Rybka at depth 23 still gave only 0.00 !
Just after the next move 44. Rd2 – Rh8 Rybka jumps to +0.30 better for white.

Very nice game for Houdini and badly judged by Rybka. I have examined the special exp61 settings influence in this case, but also the standard Rybka doesn’t judge well enough the real problems for black.

Can anyone explain why Rybka is so poor in these positions ?

Chessmaster waffled between c5 and b4. Not sure b4 is the best move here, but at least the Evals are better than zero

Bram,

This was indeed a very fine game from Houdini. It's amazing that White can actually give away the h2 pawn at move 12 and compensate for it completely with positional elements for the entire middlegame.

One evaluation element that may have made a difference is that Houdini discounts heavily (by 40 centipawn) the bishop trapped on a8 behind its own pawns. Rybka probably doesn't recognize this bishop trapping pattern.

As for the "despite being regarded so closely related…", as will be obvious to anyone watching Rybka play vs Houdini, their styles of play are very different, their evaluations are different, their main lines are very different, and their overall strenghts and weaknesses are very different. Only their playing strength is quite close.

Hi Robert,
I do agree on that. I watched a lot of games (and a lot of analysis) of Rybka versus Houdini and I came to the same conclusion. I disagree with those people who without evidence claim otherwise.

kind regards Bram

One can tweak the settings of Chessmaster so that it plays quite differently to the default settings. However, nobody doing so claims the changed settings as their own engine.

Last time I looked, I did not notice Houdini with any settings, so there is hardly something to tweak, unless you saw something which is not there...

What people? I have never seen anybody claiming Houdini had a direct connection to Rybka. People claimed other things, but not what you are saying.

He meant Rybka which is playing with unusual settings that affect its play.

Houdini is so damn strong.

Can't wait for the next version to come out.

These are a few quotes from Robert Houdart, from the chat in chessbomb during TCEC Tournament 5:
RHoudini: @Lonkosi: Houdini 1.5 will be released before the end of the year
RHoudini: Hi there, the next Houdini release will be Windows-only, no plans for a Mac version
RHoudini: @kazi92: yes, next Houdini will have tablebase support; more details later
