Nice observation!

Post by De Vos W »

I sit here in my Moscow apartment sipping my Stolichnaya vodka and sweltering in the heat as I analyze a old Rudolf Spielmann game full of speculative sacrifices. I have engines in front of me that can tactically get to the heart of the chess problem and show me resources that my comrades before me could not have seen years ago. I feel fortunate to have these chess engines of today and do not care where or who or what they are. As I read these posts I wonder if anyone uses these engines for their original purpose? All this silly debate as to their legality and on and on I wonder why does one care?? Enjoy all the free engines and yes I'll have another on the rocks.

Thank you

Dr. Ivannik

I'm afraid your reply will fall on deaf ears. Perhaps no reply at all is better---though here I am responding too!

It reminds me of the monty python movie "search for the holy grail" where after a skirmish where people were killed, the king of the swamp castle said:
Please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Let's not bicker and argue over who killed who.
It's no secret that many people lack morality, but it's getting to the point now where people like to flaunt their immorality, they are actually proud of it.

This should not be surprising to you. There is an old adage that seems to apply: if it ain't nailed down they will steal it! There is a reason why that is an old adage. And it isn't because of the sudden outbreak of honesty.

There is a of people on the forum who are deeply concerned about the legalities of Rybka and what Vas may or may not have done and are interested in seeing that justice is done. It warms my heart to see so many people that want things to be done right - and I feel good knowing there are so many people that would never pirate software or doing anything illegal themselves, or condone such behavior on the part of others either.

I agree with you. In fact, I think the whole idea of the GPL needs defending. I do not know if Vas can be legally pursued, but it seems clear that he should be pursued... otherwise the GPL is not really enforceable.

I agree with you too and I do not condone what I think Vas has done.

But my sarcasm is based on the observation that people are not being intellectually honest with themselves. If you really condemn this sort of behavior, it should be applied consistently. However, many of the ones calling out for the blood of Vas do not seem to have a problem in general with copying and cloning and are in fact the greatest advocates of it. Do you think these same people really and truly care about the legalities of the license?

Some people do, and I am one of them. I don't think ANY of this is right and I'm not picking and choosing which ones I want to forgive and which ones I want to crucify.

OK, so there are criminals without scruples. Big surprise. That is why they are criminals in the first place, not? How else could they convince themselve it is OK to steal from others? They don't care if it is stolen, or that the victims of their crimes suffer. It is just silly to worry about that. It just diminishes your oy when handling the stolen goods.

The criminal mind is really very simply to understand!

you are talking about authors here (not saying i agree with you), not end users correct?? otherwise i'm afraid yr going off the deep end as well, don.

if you think using or even supporting engines like eg houdini (i haven't 'supported' it fiscally yet, but i'd likely buy it if it comes out for sale) is somehow morally bankrupt...well let's just say that lately, the more posts i read here from many rybka supporters (of which i'd still like to consider myself one, tho that's becoming less so) & ippolit attackers, the more i think the ippolitos are closer to being 'right'.
