After more testing this position seems to belong "very difficult pawn endings"! Even if engines finds e4 fast it can later come back to about 0,00
many times. But only Critter behaves differently with bases. BTW seems to be mate in 24 as three engines think.
Didn't you set the tablebases usage to "everywhere"? Considering that I have only singlecore P4 and 32-bit only, Critter 1.0 switches to 1.e4 quite soon here:
I have the GTBs on a Corsair USB memory stick and have set 8 MB tbs. cache. But no 5p Gaviota tables. With 5p tables, maybe a slowdown effect is happening here?

Indeed, with 5p tables (of course "everywhere"), no solution (stopped after 10 minutes, depth=29), But nothing to do with "slowdown" (still more than 700kN/s).
But no problem with Houdini, also using Gaviota TBs (finds e4 immediately)
