this popped up quickly on IDeA (& i would imagine w/ MPV) using rybka 4.1 & the best line so far up to move 31 --

tried to fix some weird formatting so apologies if there are errors.

Re: Brilliant sacrifice (test position)

Post by mhalstern » Fri Apr 01, 2011 9:22 pm

Maybe not brilliant, but it is better than Nb1.

After more than 8.5 hours, Naum 4.2 still thinks Nb1 is best. If I didn't need to use my pc for other stuff, I'd let Naum chew on this for a few more plies.

This exercise brings up an interesting point: The Ipon rating list - http://www.inwoba.de/ has Naum 4.2 rated 110 points higher than Zappa Mexio II. My own rating list has Naum 94 points higher. It is clear than in engine matches with any time control, Naum 4.2 is better than Zappa Mexico II, but in this position, (I suspect many others as well) Zappa is better in a long run of infinite analysis. I wonder if there are more examples of engines much weaker than another in engine play, but better in long runs of IA.

To be fair for the reporting, Zappa was using 2 gig of hash, but Naum only used 1 gig, as that is the most the engine can support. I don't think Zappa's analysis would have been different with only 1 gig of hash: Also, Zappa was bnot using Tablebases as I had My GUI's settings for TB's disabled and forgot to re-enable it. If anything, this would have put Zappa at a disadvantage.
