Ipod Touch Chess program help

Post by Eraserheads »

Hi,
I just got a new Ipod Touch 4g. I purchased Fritz for Ipod but I now regret this decision. Fritz's elo levels are way off. Its lower levels play much much stronger than it should be and where is the advertised 100000 game database??

I wrote to apple for a refund but it doesn't seem like it's coming anytime soon. Meanwhile I have my sights set on HIARCS and Shredder. Both are I believe, stronger than Fritz for Ipod and it has a more professional set of features (for the chess player).
HIARCS costs 10 bucks and Shredder, 8 bucks. There's Chess Genius and TChess too, but I am really looking for the strongest/best packaged chess program for Ipod out there.

does Anybody have experiences / comments regarding these programs? What should I get?

It looks like you have purchased Fritz without carefully reading the reviews posted by other users.

Can I respectfully suggest that you take a look at my app Chess Tiger? It is simply called CHESS on the App Store but you will find it by searching for "Chess Tiger". Here is also a direct link to the App Store page:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/chesstiger/id423198259

There is also a "lite" version (it has been released yesterday).

I believe that if you are considering Hiarcs, Shredder, ChessGenius or tChess it is also reasonnable for you to include CHESS in your list of candidates. CHESS has features that the other apps do not provide, and the engine is of similar strength (it is actually clearly stronger than at least tChess and ChessGenius).

See by yourself and don't forget to read the reviews.

Also, AFAIK, the Fritz application is actually powered with Hiarcs.

I have Shredder, and really like it.

Best feature is the elo adjustment - SMK has done a great job in emulating weakened play (imho).

Hi, you can download several strong free chess programs for the IPod, including but not limited to, Stockfish and Glaurung. There are many low priced chess programs available too. I would suggest download a few new one's each week or month depending on your budget and play them all.

Shredder does not have a clock, so it is not very good.

Take care,

Sean

I was not aware of that and I find it a ripoff if it is true, as Hiarcs has its own version!

I'm not that sure anymore. I read that somewhere on a forum a while ago, but your surprise made me google a bit, and I found a thread on Facebook where the responsible for this App denies it:
"Fritz Chess-Iphone
Hello Tomasz,

Fritz iphone uses an specific version of the chessbase fritz engine.

Hiarcs is a proprietary chess engine that can be plugged into some chessbase products, but at this moment not at fritz iphone.

Best regards,

Jorge"

Go for the cheap or free versions,I can vouch that Chess (chess tiger) is a well rounded app that does many useful things including hadicap play and it is now in the real cheap category <$5 last time I checked and it is still being actively developed so new updates are free.I don't like Shredder because of the no time limit and setting up positions is a real pain also the navigation is cumbersome.

Thanks a lot christophe,
Thanks for the heads up. Does Chess have options to choose the various tiger styles? Normal, Gambit Tiger, Aggressive and Suicidal?
