The chess computer enthusiasts that frequent this forum need advice from programmers.
Chess software customers need to know when it is ok to buy and when it is not ok to buy a commercial program.
Lets set some guidelines before buying a program. Like a programmer must struggle with code for years and lose a lot of games in tournaments before getting to number 1 ranking. History must show a gradual increase in tournament standings over 10 years, etc.
I think Peter Skinner, Ed, Robert Hyatt, and all other programmers should post here and tell others if we should not purchase a specific program and show proof why or try to explain why.

Let's forget the "nanny buyers guide", and have a beer, instead. We get enough of that nanny business from gov't.

Lots of angry people here, it will take a lot of beer to wash away bad feelings.Dave Mitchell wrote:Let's forget the "nanny buyers guide", and have a beer, instead. We get enough of that nanny business from gov't.

Isn't Ocktoberfest over? Pubs and stores should have a lot of kegs available!
All these posts about the origin of Houdini are out of order in this thread. The origin of the program is not the topic of the thread. Posts about the origins of Houdini should be posted in either another thread, or in the origins of engines forum.
Peter, you're out of order here. You don't have the right to demand that others answer your questions - not here, or anywhere else. This is not a courtroom, you are not a judge, and Robert is not a witness.
You have no right to continually de-rail posts about Houdini, with your personal animosity toward Robert - no matter the reason.

I don't think anytime is the right time to buy.
We have very strong feature-rich engines like Komodo, Stockfish and Ivanhoe already, and there's no prizes for (most of us) in this game anyway.

All very well but how do I know when to buy the beer and what kind of beer I should buy?Let's forget the "nanny buyers guide", and have a beer, instead.
How do I know the brewing recipe for the beer has not been stolen, with the quantities for a few of the ingredients slightly changed to try and obfuscate the dastardly deed?
On a side note, is it really a good idea to start a chess engine while under the influence of alcohol?

the "christian" crucify board ("hosianna") of talkchess gives the advice to buy hiarcs,
or shredder, or junior or fritz...
problem is fritz has only few changes for the engine and much bugs in the new gui, shredder is 2 years old...

these are strong engines against SGM but against the latest programs they are weak.mclane wrote:the "christian" crucify board ("hosianna") of talkchess gives the advice to buy hiarcs,
