Rybka Vs Humans: clarification

Post by fern »

The GM Vasquez told me that the event to be celebrated here, Tuesday this week, is as this:
9 human players AND Rybka compete in a common tournament. It gives I.M norms.
After that, GM Vasquez take Rybba for two 15 minutes games.
So we will have these two fast games with Vasquez and the 9 played by Rybka against the other guys.

It is sponsored by ENTEL, the biggest telecommunications company of the country.

I do not know if Vas was contacted or what, but if you see the site of the event you will see that an officer from FIDE will be there.

Is this a joke? Why would there be any interest in seeing a bunch of players who are either IM or just hoping to become IM play Rybka on even terms? I mean it's possible that one of them might get a draw, but basically it's like watching Carlsen or Anand play a bunch of 1900 players. Certainly Rybka has nothing to gain from it.

That depends a bit if any of them are anti-computer chess specialists. If they are not then I agree that I don't see the point of it.

Since it is an IM norm tournament it is unlikely that the players are chosen for anti-computer skills; rather they are players who hope to earn IM norms. Anyway these days there are few "anti-computer" players, other than those who try silly things like blocking the game and aiming for a 50 move rule draw, which would hardly be interesting.

No joke, Larry. Simply a way to make attractive a chess tournament with something that always catch the interest of the public and the media. For average people, a game between even me and Rybka is more interesting than a technical game between two GM.
You see, NOT everything must accomplish some kind of strict scientific protocol, neither to "demonstrate" nothing.
Look at us, if you want, a a third world country trying to enhance interest in something without the help of mighty personalities and big hoopla, without Larry King, without Jerry Lewis, etc. Even without you.

My best
Fern.

It's similar to holding a race between a fast automobile and humans who aren't even top-class runners. I mean if everyone knows what the results are sure to be, the only interest is in seeing all the stupid moves the human players will surely make to lose the games. Perhaps there will be something to learn in watching how the computer exploits an extra pawn here, a huge superiority in development here, awful human pawnstructure in another game, etc. Just as there is something to learn from watching a kasparov simul for example. In my own case, I learned a huge amount at age 15 from watching a 70 board simul by Bobby Fischer. But nowadays you can just download games from such events.
If I were running the event, I'd give Rybka only one minute for the entire game each time. That way there would be a lot of talk about which side is favored and genuine uncertainty about the results. Sporting events are only interesting when the result is not known in advance.

Best,
Larry
