Its' none of both. It's a study.

It's a matter of categories of compositions evaluated by judges.
A mate in x-problem is an other category to be published and judged than a study is, you see?

Arpad Rusz showed a study then, that was somewhat "cooked" by having two solutions, no matter if one solution was 1 or 2 or 3 moves longer to mate than the other one.

"Dual" has an other meaning as for studies as it has for test postions. A dual in a study is a second move of solution no matter of length to mate. Major Dual means dual at first move, Minor Dual at later moves.

Mate in x-problems are another sort of compostion with other kind of rules for judges or journals to publish them.

The rest of the thread I then had with Arpad was somewhat ironically meant to get a difference of any kind out of the two solutions, well knowing, that it didn't count for judges and the "wearth" of the study at all.

Well, actually, my motives are far more simplistic. When I find a position I don't yet have in my list or those that are there that haven't been solved, I throw some engines at it. If any of them correctly (usually try to get two engines to agree) matches the published solution, I note it and move on. If I find a better solution/move that doesn't match the published solution, I post my results. I am just offering a correction. It might be useful for someone. As an example, Dann Corbit offers up positions for we minions to help solve, I enjoy helping out despite having modest equipment.

Chest solutions are ripe with errors. I don't trust them unless verified by another engine.

In studies the idea is similar: whether a dual is a minor or major dual does not depend on what move it occurs in, but in its importance to the theme. See also a brief discussion about duals in studies in A.J. Roycroft, Test Tube Chess (1972), p. 39.

This definition is simply common sense. "Major" means "important" here, so a "major dual" is one which ruins the study. "Minor" means "not so important" so a study can survive a minor dual. Therefore, whether a dual is "major" or "minor" has to do with how much the dual move impacts the theme. Whether the dual occurs on move 1 of the study or move 3 of the study is irrelevant to the dual's importance to the study. There is no reason to call a dual "minor" if the central theme of the study is demolished, even if the dual occurred at move 3.

In studies the idea is similar: whether a dual is a minor or major dual does not depend on what move it occurs in, but in its importance to the theme. See also a brief discussion about duals in studies in A.J. Roycroft, Test Tube Chess (1972), p. 39.

This definition is simply common sense. "Major" means "important" here, so a "major dual" is one which ruins the study. "Minor" means "not so important" so a study can survive a minor dual. Therefore, whether a dual is "major" or "minor" has to do with how much the dual move impacts the theme. Whether the dual occurs on move 1 of the study or move 3 of the study is irrelevant to the dual's importance to the study. There is no reason to call a dual "minor" if the central theme of the study is demolished, even if the dual occurred at move 3.

Thanks for the very detailed explantation, of course number of moves along the lines isn't the only one criterion for calling a dual major or minor, but It's usally one of them yet too. A dual at move 7 won't count as much as at first one in practice. If a second way of solution isn't about the same thematic content as the main solution is, it's judges' task to decide how much meaning that has for their rating of the piece.So the term major or minor dual is always to be seen in context of a single certain example. You can't judge a certain study out of a text in an Encyclopedia, otherwise you wouldn't need judges at all.

All I wanted to point out was if a (computer-chess) test- position has more than one solution it's not the same to say it has a dual solution as this means in terms of composed studies.

Also, it is far from clear to me that the Salai win study (Sachova Skladba/4 EG#16028, 2011, 1p. Heijden database #3465)

has a major dual at move 1, as was claimed on some other threads. After the proposed dual 1. Bd1!? (1. f4!), black has 1...Bd2 2. f4 B:f4 3. Kd7 Bd2 4. Kc6 Ba5 5. b4 c:b4 6. Bb3+ the position repeats the main line one move delayed. Thus, the Salai study here might be considered a loss-of-time dual, that is a minor dual, on move 1. However, I am not sure either of the accuracy of my analysis nor or of precisely how that analysis ought to impact the question of whether the study has a major or minor dual. My intuition is that this is a minor dual, but I have not investigated it in detail.
