Hi all. I know this is a bit off topic but....

I have been using Avast! for a number of years now, but the latest updates have turned this program into a false positive monster. It wants to "auto sandbox" a good number of chess programs that I have tried. What turned the tide for me was that it detected my own engine as "suspicious", which is absolutely ridiculous, since my engine's I/O capabilities are limited to reading files.

Any recommendations?

AVG and Avir are the ones I used to use.

I will reply offtopic: no idea on best antivirus today, but you will solve many problems by switching to linux. At least move to linux all important stuff. Dual boot, windows for all unsafe things

Yeah,I agree....it's so annoying in that matter but I'm still stick to it....

You can turn the "auto sandbox" off from the settings by the way....

I did use Avast for a long time . Had problems with some of the updates. Switched to AVG. It started giving trouble also. So now back to
Microsoft Security Essentials which works very well so far.

Immunet 3.0 free version, faultless for me.

I saw where 3 or 4 people like Microsoft Security Essentials. I tried it, but soon after installing it did not detect a Trojan that sneaked past and became a pain in the watoosie for a bit. (For that matter AVG did not detect it either, but I installed AVG after the Trojan had already infected the 'puter, so I think that had something to do with it.) It took ESET to find the Trojan, and this program is, if nothing else almost a must have back up. The trouble is that it is not free - not overly expensive, but not free. Usually I like to use a kind of team: AVG free which is pretty close to the top free AV out there the last I saw. Also, Malwarebytes is a good partner with AVG and does not cause a conflict. The third part is AdAware. All three have free editions and do not conflict with each other. Nor have I ever had any trouble with any of them giving a false positive to any of my chess programs. For me personally, I will not use MSE again; it just seems not as robust at catching Trojans and viruses as the setup I use. Of course, ymmv.

Robert, I use MS Security Essentials on all my machines. When Windows 8 comes out in October 2011, it will have its own innate antivirus program similar to MS Sec. Essentials.
