Nothing to worry about. They sell gloves that work with smartphones now...

To get a perspective of how much faster the new CPU is: Can someone please benchmark the same SF version on an iPhone 5? Use the opening position, and run the program in analysis mode for a minute or so. I'm perfectly aware that the iPhone 5 is already included on the list of benchmarks posted in this thread, but that number is probably for an older SF version compiled with an older compiler version, and therefore not directly comparable to the new iPhone 5s benchmark.

I get 250 kN/s on my iPhone 4s, and 300kN/s on my iPad 3.
So I gather that the new version StockFish 4xx has higher n/s than the previous version and would suggest a 10% rough estimate. I thought this was the case. As I have tested the ChessBase app on Android which uses SF3 on a Galaxy Note II and get significantly more than the 714kn/s documented in this thread. Also I would be interested in the general speed up on the iphone 5s for other chess apps that have not made a 64 bit version.

SmallChess, iPhone 5 is 784484 nodes and iPhone 5s is 1180000. Stockfish for iOS 7 32 bits is 585kN/s.

Another way to look at the stats :

The A7 chip gets 446,500 per 1.0 GHz ( I used 1.29 GHz for speed )

My 5 year old desktop has a quad core i7 (940) chip . It was pretty good in it's day. My i7 gets about 430,000 per 1.0 GHz

Exciting times ...........

Very exciting times indeed. Patiently waiting for the Snapdragon 800 results. Anyone with an LG G2, the new Sony Xperia, or a Note 3?

On a different note, I cannot believe just how fast the Apple chips are when you consider that they are just dual core and so underclocked. If they ever built a phone with a larger screen, I would seriously consider it.

They bought two start-ups designing enhanced ARM CPUs, so they have talented teams to develop really innovative CPUs. It has been rumored that there exists prototypes of Macs running with ARM CPUs....

I noticed, like Glen, that this A7 chip is nearly as powerful per core as a desktop CPU's core. Stockfish is only twice as fast on core i7 Macbook Pro...

Something else that is very impressive is the pace of innovation: Apple releases a new Ax CPU per year, each one being more than twice as fast as the previous one. This far exceeds the pace of innovation for desktop CPUs.

Computer chess' future really lies in those portable devices.

We saw Microsoft miss the embedded devices' turn... Maybe we'll see Intel slip out of the embedded CPUs' race as well...

The reason is chess engine is very dependent on L1 cache size. Snapdragon 800 has only 32kb total L1 cache. Our desktop PC has 64kb. But A7 of iPhone 5s has 128kb!!
