Re: how an engine survives?
All the engines you mentioned are commercial programs. Many of the strongest chess engines these days are free: Critter, Stockfish, Ivanhoe and Ippolit derivates. Since all of them could beat any human being, why would you bother paying for something else?MM wrote:zappa, naum, chiron, onno, shredder....finished ....''ideas''?

Zappa - finished. Code given to Zach Wegner who is developing it further under the name Rondo.MM wrote:zappa, naum, chiron, onno, shredder....finished ....''ideas''?

Naum - supposedly finished too, but never say never.
Chiron - still being developed. My understanding is that Ubaldo will release an update when he feels he's been able to make a worthwhile improvement.
Onno - finished. Website removed. Engine no longer available.
Shredder - new version will be released, I'm picking when Stefan feels he's made a worthwhile improvement.

Thank you Graham. But is it more difficult nowadays to find something new in chess programming?Graham Banks wrote:Zappa - finished. Code given to Zach Wegner who is developing it further under the name Rondo.MM wrote:zappa, naum, chiron, onno, shredder....finished ....''ideas''?

I understand what you mean and honestly i think it is one of the reason why several programmers left or reduced heavily their work on chess.Dan Astrachan wrote:All the engines you mentioned are commercial programs. Is Rondo ever going commercial? I believe I have asked this question in the past.

Wouldn't it just be Zappa with some modifications, just under a different name?mhalstern wrote:Is Rondo ever going commercial? I believe I have asked this question in the past.
Wouldn't that make it like some other engines that get given a hard time around here?

err no, as Anthony gave his code to Zach. Did Fabien gift his to anyone?Graham Banks wrote:Wouldn't it just be Zappa with some modifications, just under a different name?mhalstern wrote:Is Rondo ever going commercial? I believe I have asked this question in the past.

I wasn't referring to Rybka.Harvey Williamson wrote:err no, as Anthony gave his code to Zach. Besides, not all programmers seem to agree on that one anyway.
Faien gifted his source code to the community to study and learn from.
