An unusual chess set

Post by sje »

An advertisement for an unusual, meta-stable chess set which is new to me:

Perhaps if one drinks enough pre-game alcohol, the pieces will appear to stand still.

I wonder where the style for accents of the opposing color on some of the pieces came from?

I'm fortunate to have the Maryhill Museum of Art nearby. They have an excellent chess set collection displayed in their basement level.

At least if you a winning, your opponent cant knock the table and cause the position to scramble.

On the other hand, the above set is forbidden to me as my four cats would surely see it as 32 irresistible kitty toys.

But I do congratulate its designer. It is an original approach and not something I myself would have considered.

I am amazed at the quality and detail of the sculpting and painting seen in some of those sets. The artisans who made these must have had a level of skill and patience far, far advanced compared to what I could claim.

Where are such artisans today? Saying that such chess sets would be too expensive to make in these New Days, well, they were surely just as expensive in the Old Days.
