XP is maybe the issue there.

1. what is the position you are using (FEN).

2. what EGTBs are you using? 5? 6?

I slightly modified the way EGTBs are probed (depth-wise) but I have not seen any hangs and can't imagine why such would happen...
1: Any position (the particular examples I posted in the earlier post: rn1qkb1r/2p2ppp/p3pn2/1p2N3/3P4/N5P1/PP2PPbP/R1BQ1RK1 w kq - 0 10 )
2: 5 men

Thanks,
Martin
Hmm. I can't make it fail here. At least with board or in console mode.

First line is a blank line.
I use Peter's build.

mt=16
egtb
tbpath=C:\EGTB\Nalimov\
hash=1024M
hashp=128M
cache=128M
ponder off
learn 0
book off
log=off
exit
Hi Graham,

By adding the space in the first line, the output is normal. But Crafty does not respect any of the below options, like mt and hash size etc...

So we're getting closer... :)
Can you just start it up, terminate it, and post the log file here???

Did not matter. BUT! I solved it. All the crafty.rc required was a blank new line at the end, after the exit command.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Best,
Martin
Actually what it requires (assuming windows) is a CR/LF on the end of the LAST line. If you use something like notepad to create that file, it will leave that off. Adding a blank line solves it because the last real line now has a cr/lf.

The problem with the above is that with the cr/lf missing, the last command goes into the input buffer, but it is not complete. The NEXT command, which comes from stdin, is simply appended and that will end up ignoring the second command...

I had forgotten about this, but it is a known windows issue.

If you build it correctly, it should work as you have it. Notepad is bad about leaving off the CR/LF from the last line in a file. And that will certainly break things.

Notepad++ shows that I have a CRLF after the exit, and a blank line after that, so that is why all is well for me then.

Unfortunately no one worked on my system, exception crafty-23.8-x86

I need crafty-23.8-x64

My system
Win XP x64 Pro
QX9650 3.0GHz
That is an XP issue. I will post new builds shortly for XP x64.

I was kicked out of Chapters because I moved all the Bibles to the fiction section.
