Could be worse. For example, Fishstock.

The engine is open source. Change a few lines and it will call itself whatever you wish. How about Magnus?

100% agree.

"Stockfish" is just a cheap shot at Rybka, the relevance of which is passing.

It has a new testing method, now is the time for a new name.

The name "Stockfish" maybe was a tweak at Rybka, but it is also symbolic of the union of Norway and Italy, the nations of Tord and Marco.

Why Stockfish ?

- It's a fish ;-)

- It is produced in Norway and cooked in Italy. Indeed the biggest part of norvegian stockfish is exported in Italy where is lovely cooked.

I don't recall any previous data proving that it's a cheap shot at Rybka but I still insist that it's rather a silly name for such a monstrous chess entity....

I believe there is a chess engine already named Thor. I like Medusa much better. Who says it has to be a guy engine. Why not feminine? :?

Together with a couple of computer chess friends, we have built a dedicated chess computer with the Raspberry Pi and a Teensy USB Development Board.
The chess engine we use is Stockfish and the Teensy software is called
'Sish'.

Putting all this together we have named our chess computer,

'SishFishPi'

Sniper would be a bad-ass name.

Also very fitting since it searches very deep...
