My guess is that Gates inadvertently allowed an early mate
so the flow of the occasion was intact, if you get what I mean.

A good (very) good player can deliberate blunder in a benefice of other problems, as we saw in this game. Is very probable Carlsen spotted the winning combination, and had a plan B in case 9.Re1
