Who needs 128 threads?

Post by mcostalba »

I have pushed a patch to enable up to 128 threads (up from 64) in Stockfish.

It can be downloaded from here: http://abrok.eu/stockfish/

Usually I don't announce development versions, but this time I'd like to have some broader testing of this feature, mainly because we are not able to test ourselves due to missing hardware.

I remember in the past someone asked for higher than 64 threads in SF, so maybe this can be the right time to test it.

NOTE: Please do NOT test this version in public rating lists, there is no difference with any other dev version but for the increased number of max threads. So all the people that has machines with less than 64 threads DO NOT NEED to download this version.

LOL, which is 99.99% of players I'm guessing

Many thanks for this great update dear Marco!

Really I am very glad that Stockfish is already supporting 128 threads (64 cores) !!

Btw,
I think Mr. Lukas Cimiotti can test it and as far I know his cluster hardware is including 296 cores!

And I will request from Lukas to run a new Stockfish benchmark on his monster hardware!

Best Regards,

actually, the % of chess players who do not use =>64 cores would be on the order of 99.9999, which in contrast to the essential assumption of Bayes’s Calculus, does not equal 100. Trivia.

Hello dear Bobby,

+1

Just I would like to add,
I changed my mind to build a new 24 core hardware
Due to some MP engines do not support 24 cores

For example,
My 6 core machines are ideal for overall MP Engine testings!
At least, all of the Top 20 MP engines support 6 cores...

What's the relation between number of threads and power consumption ?

The more threads the more electricity costs ? On my machine I can only run four threads.

It was a naive question?

No serious question. If cooling is necessary than that means more heat had been produced so more energy loss.

Stockfish doesn't run on a cluster.

To test SF on 128 cores one would need a system with a single mainboard having e.g. 8 sockets, each socket holding a 16-core cpu.

I think with Intel CPUs you can currently get to 120 cores using 8 of these.

Oh, yes...I missed that

Btw,
Is there a way to build another new Stockfish version (Stockfish cluster) which can be run on Cluster hardwares too?

I mean like Rybka cluster or like Toga cluster... ?!

Then maybe we can see Stockfish cluster bench performance at 296 cores..
