i do think SF/komodo/houdini on something akin to the hardware mentioned above could potentially make a great match against carlsen though.

So how do you think Stockfish running on an iPad Air 2 would fare against Magnus Carlsen under World Championship conditions?
If a 3-cores A8 running at 1.5 GHz is 40% as fast as a 8-cores Core i7 running at 2.5 GHz, then an 8-cores A8 running at 2.5 GHz would be more than 75% faster than you core i7 ! Apple could really go all ARM even on their OS X machines !

My i7 at 2.5 GHz number was based on 4 cores. But yes, point taken, the iPad Air 2 has the power of desktop.

I believe you're mistaken about the power of A8 RISC processors.

I'd like to see hard data on that.

And no, Carlson wouldn't be crushed by Stockfish on an iPad Air 2.

While I don't know about Carlsen but I know the other World Champion was totally destroyed by Stockfish on her iPhone.

Stockfish on an iPad Air2 can easily beat Fritz and Deep Junior
from 2004-2005 with the hardware that it used in the matches(I ignore hydra because it cannot be tested)

These programs based on their performance in 2004-2005 are not weaker than carlsen.(they could beat humans with the result 5-3 after ignoring hydra)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human%E2%8 ... ss_matches

The only way that Carlsen can have chances against stockfish is in case that one of the following is correct:
1)Carlsen is stronger against engines relative to other top GM's
2)Stockfish is weaker against humans relative to Fritz and Junior.
3)Top humans improved significantly since 2004(more than 100 elo improvement)

I see no reason to assume one of the options is correct.

Fritz in Bahrain (Deep Fritz 7) - Kramnik (2807 elo) = 4- 4 (2002) //SF benchmark:1400-1500
X3D Fritz (Deep Fritz 8)- Kasparov (2830 elo) = 2- 2 (2003)// SF benchmark:1500-1600
Deep Junior 8 - Kasparov (2847 elo) = 3- 3 (2003) // SF benchmark:2200-2300

SF 5 elo (1 cpu) is +652 elo higher than Deep Fritz 8 (1cpu) //CEGT(40/20)
SF 5 elo (1 cpu) is +695 elo higher than Junior 8 (1cpu) //CEGT(40/20)

I am sure that Stockfish 5 at a weak hardware (over 20 kn/s benchmark) is strong enough to beat Carlsen or other Top Chess Players (with a strong opening book)

This really sounds like an awesome challenge! We just need to make it happen,

Unfortunately Carlsen is not a sadist and neither are any of the top super GM's. And yes of course it would be fun to watch ... but probably not fun to play by the GM.

I believe in a video Naka echoed your remarks (ish), but he went on to play the matches against SF anyways. :D
