And yes of course I forgot to mention ... Huge congratulations to the Komodo team as they really have pushed their engine to an extremely high level. Also an excellent job by the SF team ... I am sure they are already working on improvements for the next TCEC. And thanks to Martin Thoresen for making this a very enjoyable session with a great setup where you can see what each engine is thinking. There will always be people who would have liked some differences in the format and might think adding or changing one thing gave an advantage to another engine ... but in the end it was done in an absolutely fair way. Maybe SF did suffer more because it had lack of EGTB's ... but with SF's really deep and fast search, I thought the disadvantage would be to Komodo. The majority of games were draws and out of 64 games only 11 were decisive. But that is mostly due to the very high level of play from both sides.

Gull is probably the surprise this year as it really hammered SF and Houdini in the playoffs and if it wasn't for the lopsided score against Komodo it could have possible reached the final. Gull seemed to have found a chink in Houdini and SF armour as it got way too many wins against them than its ELO rating suggests it should!

My very best congratulations to Komodo Team for winning the TCEC Superfinal in stage 7.
I am very glad to see Komodo winning.
I also congratulate Stockfish team for their awesome engine. Its no shame to be second with just a few games less in TCEC.

You would think that SF's incredibly deep search would totally outplay Komodo in the endgame, but I think the opposite was true. Komodo was really impressive in how it was able to come up with very deep plans in fortress like positions and force SF into zugwang and loss of material. I got the feeling that with even longer time controls (or read that as faster hardware), Komodo would open up a gap vs. SF. Also SF seemed to have a weaker time control management algo, as it spent way too much time on some obvious captures and kept falling back on the clock ... however I don't think that would have made a difference in the match as they were no one move blunders caused by not having enough time that I could see.

The most notable game must have been game 57 ... and although it ended up in a draw ... it was an incredible attack by SF that would have floored any other chess entity on earth, however Komodo played a perfect defense and never had its evaluation waver. If this game was played by humans for sure it would have been game of the century and the number of "!" and "!!" and "!!!" on both sides would be astronomical. This game is a good example of how far computer chess engines have come!

Wow,what a vicious attack that is....

I strongly doubt any human could resist such an attack with the black pieces....

There are billion numbers of moves and variations that will get him in the serious error path....

Question: Will Season 8 stage 2 also be played without opening book? How did this experiment work out in your opinion?

Beautiful! I didn't watch it at the time.

(But i now see that even the small SF top evaluation line on Chessbomb, predicted most of these moves, before they were played by Komodo. So maybe it's all just regular computer stuff).

My quick observations:

1. Thanks Martin!

2. I won my bet, +3 points for Komodo.

3. Komodo won the match due to many more wins in closed positions; if it had not been for closed positions, SF would have achieved at least a draw.

4. SF could have lost even by a higher margin, if Komodo did not lose a couple of innocent-looking endgames.

5. Komodo clearly outplayed SF in closed positions, SF was better in more open positions and endgames, in neutral-type positions Komodo was a bit better, but did not score better.

6. It is obvious that at this TC and hardware Komodo is recognizably better than SF; looking at the games that were drawn, in most of them Komodo was left with advantage. So the result of the match is not just due to chance.

7. Anyone having a clue why Komodo was using 2 times less time than SF? Definitely Komodo can use more time in the early stages of the game.

8. Final word about the book. Excellent book, in the sense that openings were fully even. Only deficiency for me in the openings chosen for the final are the too many cases when many pawns and pieces have been exchanged. Humans and engines see it differently; humans thinks positions with open play and many attacks/exchanges are interesting and difficult, but quite the opposite for engines - they find such positions trivial and easy to play. And indeed, all positions with many exhanged pawns and pieces ended with a quick draw, with constant 0.0 scores.

If all the openings had been like in stage 4, the final would have been even more interesting, and we would have had 22, not just 11 wins.

Here I fully agree with Jhor: leave the engines with a full set of pawns and pieces (maybe excluding the Sicilian) and let them decide how to proceed and what to change.

9. Anyone having a clue when SF 6 will be released?
Does it make sense to release an egnine with just 40 bullet elo improvement/ 25-28 blitz elo improvement? From my experience 35-40 blitz elo improvement is the least measurable improvement.

10. For next TCEC, SF should improve its closed play, and Komodo its endgames. :)

11. Again, many thanks to everyone involved in TCEC preparation.

K8 did win TCEC, but the factoid that I note is how close the final score was against SF.

Essentially, the programs are equal. Not much different between the two programs, except the price :P

Cordially,

Which one do YOU think is more ingenious and deep?
That's a really hard call for me to make. I felt the match could easily could have gone either way. However if you are putting me on the spot then I will go with Komodo due to the quality of some of the defenses it found. There were a lot of games where I felt as a human that Stockfish lost its way after reaching good positions. But hey what do I know, I am a human after all.

One of my favorite theoretical battles from TCEC Season 7 had to be game 19

Re: Komodo wins TCEC

Sean Evans wrote:K8 did win TCEC, but the factoid that I note is how close the final score was against SF.

Essentially, the programs are equal. Not much different between the two programs, except the price :P

Cordially,

Sean
Yes I agree that the engines are very close. The winning margin is not enough in my view to be conclusive that Komodo is stronger. But that isn't what a tournament is for, it is a battle and whoever wins on the day is the champ ! So congratulations to the Komodo team for a nice victory.

Having said that, Stockfish did seem to struggle in the qualifying rounds, and that I found very odd. Across the whole tournament Komodo clearly performed better this time, and Komodo's victory was 100% deserved.
