Intel Xeon X5650 12 cores, hyperthreading disabled.
Sorry, no offence, but that's a pretty poor Benchmark for a 12-Core.
No wonder even dual-xeon players fail to beat me....or something wrong with your Hardware.
I has become pretty obvious that you are very fond of your hardware, even disrespecting people with older hardware on occasion and now implying someone made a bad upgrade decision.

My advice to you is to actually give your post some thought in advance before submitting it. You might have noticed that the benchmark is a measure for the performance of a single core and does not say anything about the nps achieved on 12 cores.

I really have problems justifying a single € for a new PC! there is very little progress with Intel - regarding single core efficency.

Agree - unless you didn't have high power machine before. Good result for an "old" machine.

You have a valid point but I hope you did not only consider every single euro of the initial purchase alone. The efficiency in terms of kW/h for a 2500K running @ 4.4GHz is not cheap when compared to more recent chips with a smaller die size. I suppose you have made calculations about running a i5-2500K @ 4.4GHZ and what the extra cost is in euro to run this chip 24/7 ? In case such an overclock would add 70 Watts to the equation under full load then this alone will add about 40 cents each day to the bill, or 146 euro's annually.

Assuming your 70W are correct it would be more like 170€ in an 24/7 enviroment here in Germany (the pure CPU (no board or faster Memory to get the little speed advantage calculated in) would be paid in 1.5 years)
My comp is running for at least 6h a day, but most of it is surfing and a bit music. The system is sitting idle most of the time. If I am generous it is 1h with 70W per day. That summs up to 7.15€ - per year!

Besides that, a 2500k is officialy specified with a TDP of 95W, an i5 4690k with 88W. Yes it is a smaller die and yes the difference in power consumption when overclocking is bigger but I really doubt the 70W difference and doubt you can OC it with a 40€ air cooler to 4.4 GHz.
Running it at stock speed gives about the same difference in single core performance with only 7W! Now assuming your 24/7 scenario we are at 17.17€ per year. I don't bother to calculate this for my 1h per day :-)

In short: Your scenario is really worst case AND Intel hasn't gained a lot in single core performance for 5 years. Additionaly the marketing about beeing much more power efficent is exactly that: Marketing!

I can financaly justify to use my 2500K until it dies (as long as Intel is not comming up with something real substancial)

TDP:
2500k: http://ark.intel.com/products/52210/Int ... z?q=2500k
i5-4690K: http://ark.intel.com/products/80811/Int ... -3_90-GHz

It is like a car. Of course newer models are more cost effective and enviromental friendly but as long as the old one is running it is the cheapest and most enviromnatal friendly solution you can have!

Actually that is a very respectable benchmark when you consider that the Xeon x5650 was introduced on March 16, 2010.

You can get a (used) workstation with a dual x5650 for about $600 on ebay, and the CPU mark for such a setup is on par with a stock core-i7 4790k without overclocking.

Default settings - single core.

Type "go depth 22" - should only take few seconds.

This is testing hardware - not the engine , so few words about your setup would be appropriate. Just copy and paste the last two lines.

I'll go first:

Code: Select all

info time 28934 nodes 52612628 nps 1818366 hashfull 982
bestmove e2e4 ponder e7e5

iMac 5K Retina i7 4.0Ghz 32gb Ram
If you keep the result pasting the results within my code brackets it will make it easier for those who want to see them and also easier for those that want to skip them
Now we can do Komoko 9.1 Benchmarks - looks like we're seeing some additional pruning. Same machine as before. Single Core

Code: Select all

info time 21570 nodes 39300110 nps 1821895 hashfull 919
bestmove e2e4 ponder e7e5
