Now this is a well known theme and a computer solves it in no time. It is fun though to solve it yourself since it has some tricky variations. But the really funny part is that if you decide that only knight promotions are legal you can solve it in one move less :)

SOLVED THE POSITION (10 engines):

As far as solvers, first the dedicated mate finders (not surprising):

Code: Select all

Seconds Engine
 0.009 ChestUCI (version?)
 0.330 SF Matefinder (by Ellis)
1.000 Chest 3.19 (command line version) ---> the exact solving time is not reported
 1.321 SF Matefinder (other version)
then the general purpose engines:

Code: Select all

Seconds Engine
0.424 Houdini 4 Pro (Tactical Mode)
 0.476 Critter 1.6a
 1.930 Sting 6
 2.020 Houdini 4 Pro
 7.657 Strelka 6
49.625 Gull 3
I only gave a minute each, so I guess others can solve it.

I notice that all of the solvers except sting are at least influenced by Ivanhoe or Rybka family tree. I did not study Sting enough to know if there are any Ivanhoe/Rybka techniques in it like the huge material imbalance table.
Sting uses my original ideas only, with exception that is based on Stockfish 2.1.1 and it doesn't help in question to solve any tough positions. :)

Cute observation. White can simply promote to a knight for a third time and then ignore the black passer, since it can only promote without check.

As usual, it's null-move related.
Disabling nmp makes this a matter of 1-2 seconds, there's a reason why I have a nullmove checkbox in engine params, no need for fake lobotomized SF version :)

And the computers won't help you with that one :)

To make myself clear: I don't mean Sting, it's an awesome project and I use it to analyze difficult positions, I guess it's obvious now what I mean (those who fork latest SF and make random 10 line changes)

It solves the mate in 16 easily but I was refering to the solution in one move less when you add the limitation that only knight promotions are legal. I modified my own program to solve it that way though so in a way you are right.
