But 6...Kd7 may be flawed. For 6.Rge3 (instead of 6.Qe2) I previously wrote that after 6...Rg8 7.Re4 g3 "[...] the original idea of Re4 to take d4 with the rook and then with the queen is no longer available for White". But I continued that analysis and found the following promising line:

1...Qf5 2.Nxf5 gxf5 3.Rg3 h5 4.Re2 Re7 5.Re1 Rge8 6.Rge3 Rg8 7.Re4 g3 8.R4e2 Rg4 9.Rg2 Reg7 10.Reg1 R7g6 11.Qd1

and now I only see winning lines for White, e.g.:
11...Rg7 12.Rxg3 Rxg3 13.Rxg3 Rxg3 14.Qxh5 +-
11...Bxg2 12.Rxg2 Ke7 13.Qf3 Kf7 14.Rxg3 Rxg3 15.e6+ Kxe6 16.Qxc6+ +-

The reason is 7...g3 which opens the fortress. But without g3, White will play the Joseph idea, e.g.:

7...Rge8 8.Qf2 Rg8 9.Rxd4 cxd4 (9...g3 10.Qg1) 10.Qxd4 which looks very promising for White.

Any improvements over that?
Yes I guess.
Sorry for the late answer, didn't find the time till now to even read your latest postings.
I admit that you made it for the first time to give a line reaching e4 with a white Rook, if it isn't taken on e3 already, which I think might not be good in this setup neither.
I'll have to ponder a while if it would be better to double the black Rooks on g- line or go to c- line with one of them.
Here is a first try for the latter, which was Lyudmils idea too, if I got him right.

1... Qf5 2. Nxf5 gxf5 3. Rg3 h5 4. Re2 Re7 5. Re1 Rc7 6. Rge3 Rg6 7. Qf2 Rg8 8. Re4 Rg6 9. Rxd4 and maybe White will make it now with the Rook- sac still but maybe not yet.

Anyhow you made it, that Black seems to have not all the time in the world, 5...Rge8 6...Rg8 7...Rge8 8...Rg8 of course is a little bit much of a gift from Black as for tempo- losses, isn't it?
:)

If it's really as narrow as it seems, we should consider another move for Black instead of 4...Re7 yet also maybe.
I hope I'll come to a final conclusion about my best line till tomorrow noon.
Till then
Peter.

As you see reading my posting once again, I went on from the not mistyped (without braces possible) move and didn't make a big deal out of that.
I simply didn't want to look at Dann's (the author's?) solution variant itself too much, moving the King unnessearily for my pov.

So let's stick to Joseph's Rook-sac again please first, here is my momentary .pgn, leading to draw probably after such too.
Yesterday I tried a black Rook at c-line, today I yet think the doubling of the Rooks at g-line is better:

I hope I haven't mixed up the lines as for their priorities, comments and evals, but I guess I probably will have done so here and there.

Of course not until edit- time was over I realized to have forgotten to delete the unnecessary long lines. But these were and can be used to see how many moves the engines with default parameters need to see the fortress by coming nearer to the 50 moves. As a matter of fact they don't "see" the fortresses not yet even then, they just see the draw as a "mechanical solution".

My conclusion as for the whole thing is that:
Even if White can find a way to open up the fortress, it costs so much material and or advancing of the black g-pawn, that the outcome of these lines might become doubtable too sooner or later.

So even if the study can be cooked in the meaning of the art, I yet think it to be a good test position, even if not in the classical meaning of this neither. As for simple judging of the first move, 1...Qf5 is a clear bm to me anyhow, with any other one 1. move Black is lost for sure and rather quickly.

To see the possibility of the fortress and to find ways to play against it is not only a matter of evals, it's a matter of the search (of course driven by evals) and as long as engines don't get any kind of progress- judging over the search and the quotients of the evals over the lines (I still think that would help more than dealing with numeric differencies only) I don't see any hope for a real advance in development in this importand direction.

Sitll Houdini's (and other engines') trick with the number of moves to 50 is the best approach so long to me, but of course it's no real solution to the problem neither

An interesting side note is that a 24 hour analysis of the original position shows that the brain-dead take the rook move may also end in a draw.

Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

After having done that all to all of us, dear Dann, could you be so kind to give a hint where you have the piece taken from?
:)

Even if White can find a way to open up the fortress, it costs so much material and or advancing of the black g-pawn, that the outcome of these lines might become doubtable too sooner or later.
Your main line has 6...g3 and 7...g2 again. In my opinion this will lose the game for Black as it opens the fortress (I mentioned this in my longer analysis) and allows the following winning response for White:
(1...Qf5 2.Nxf5 gxf5 3.Rg3 h5 4.Re2 Re7 5.Re1 Rg6 6.Rge3 g3 7.Rg1 g2)
8.Re2 Reg7 (8...Bf3 9.Rexg2 +-) 9.Qd1 threatening Rexg2 followed by Qf3 or Qxh5, and now I only see winning lines for White, e.g.:
9...Rh7 10.Rf2 Rg4 11.Qe2 Rhg7 12.Rfxg2 Bxg2 13.Rxg2 Rxg2 14.Qf3! Rh2 15.Qxh5 Kd7 16.Qh6 Rgg2 17.Qd6+ Ke8 18.Qxc6+ Kf7 19.Qxc5 +-
9...Rh6 10.Rf2 Rg4 (10...Rg3 11.Qe2 Re3 12.Qd2 Rg6 13.Rgxg2 +-) 11.Qe2 Rhg6 12.Rfxg2 Bxg2 13.Rxg2 Rxg2 14.Qf3! +-
9...Rg8 10.Rf2 Rg4 11.Qe2 R8g7 12.Rfxg2 Bxg2 13.Rxg2 Rxg2 14.Qf3! +- (see 9...Rh7)
9...Rg4 10.Rexg2 Bxg2 11.Rxg2 Rxg2 12.Qf3! +- (see 9...Rh7)
9...Bf3 10.Rexg2 Bxg2 (10...Bxd1 11.Rxg6+ +-) 11.Qxh5 Rg8 12.Qe2 +-

So it seems there is still some potential for White ...

Well done , Sven, you're right.

So I have to try 5...Reg7 instead of Rg6 (you have the line already in the .pgn) but I fear having seen your upper lines there will be a breakthrough after 5...Reg7 possible too.
In this case my honest appologies to Mr. Ellis, please tell him, he was right, I was wrong, just as for more or less chances to open up the fortress, but if he would have shown me these lines some earlier, I wouldn't have been so obtrusive and wouldn't have had so much work.
:)
On the other hand, now I'd have to change my whole .pgn as for comments and priorities again, if the study was really cooked.
:(
If I find something new, I'll be back (c Terminator)
Peter.
