But what is the right move?
I can easily find alternatives for all the other am h6 moves in the article, but that one position eludes me.

What shall I move instead?
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

I have that position in a list of positions that are getting a 5 hour pounding over the weekend.

So we will see if something turns over in the night.

It is a nice example for Henk that if attacked on the flank, you should seek a counterattack through the center. Rasmus Althoff nicely summed up the argument, worth rereading.

Here it seems that Black sort of has to ignore the bishop, because it is poisoned and instead move a Rook on the centerfile because White's d5 pawn is undefended and undefendable. The attack through the center is extra strong here. White can retract the Bishop so then gets the pawn on h6 for free, but loses d5 or try to do something about the rook on d8. The last variation is the main line:

[Event "?"]
[Site "?"]
[Date "2016.09.24"]
[Round "?"]
[White "?"]
[Black "?"]
[Result "*"]
[SetUp "1"]
[FEN "2r2rk1/1bq1bppp/p4n2/np1P2B1/3p4/5N1P/PP3PP1/RB1QRNK1 b - -"]

1... h6 2. Bxh6 Rfd8 3. Bf5 gxh6 4. Bxc8 Rxc8 5. Qxd4 Bxd5
6. Rac1 Nc6 7. Qh4 Bxf3 8. gxf3 Nd5 9. Qxh6 Qd6 10. Qh5

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Eelco, you looked at the wrong position; the position discussed in this thread is in the first post.

[d]r2q1rk1/pp1n1ppp/2pbpn2/6B1/3P3Q/2NB3P/PPP3P1/R4RK1 b – – 0 12
Diemer-Markus, 1974

There can be no doubt that 12...h6 is the only move in this position. Anyone can see that White is threatening mate in three, against which Black has three plausible replies:

12...g6 - drops a piece
12...h5 - drops a pawn and eventually another while exposing the black king

That leaves only 12...h6. Black gets a piece and an exposed king for three pawns; White gets a dangerous-looking attack that doesn't seem to be enough for a win, though.

Code: Select all

Walking Komodo manually through the PV helps it realize that SF's (and the German blog's) choice of 15.Qxh6 is superior to 15.Rf3; the eval starts growing in White's favor. As Komodo looks deeper into the forced line that follows its enthusiasm dampens considerably:

[d]r2q1r2/pp2b1k1/2p1Qn2/5B2/3P1R2/7P/PPP3P1/R5K1 b - - 0 19
This position arises after 12... h6 13. Bxh6 gxh6 14. Ne4 (14.Qxh6 Re8 and 15...Bf8 promises even less) Be7 15. Qxh6 Nxe4 16. Bxe4 f5 17. Qxe6+ Kg7 18. Bxf5 (Prof Eingenmann's line ends here with the clearly over-optimistic "mit starkem Angriff") 18... Nf6 (otherwise White regains his piece with 19.Qxd7) 19. Rf4

Black can hold, 12...h6 is the only move. It's a case of a bad example of the "h6 Syndrome".
