I always play Petroff. Against the Cochrane gambit I play g6, but is true that is not easy to win with black. Anyway at long time control nobody plays it, at least at my accustomed level of play.

Against Nimzowitsch attack I go for 0-0-0 with black. You can see some of my games. I think is really difficult to obtain anything with white.

Two years ago I got three times Cochrane gambit in a week and I lost all three games with black while I usually draw in other lines. Might be nowadays it is not so popular anymore.

At that time I remember someone saying Cochrane gambit no one plays it.

I don't like to take much risk. I switched from Petroff's defence to Modern defense. But there you have Austrian attack which I don't like. So I was thinking about going back to Petroff.

Don't know what is safest/most solid defense for black. In Caro Kan you have Panov variation so that's not much better.

I don't think he will like leaving his king in the center, or foregoing castling in most cases. I do love playing that opening as black however.

Pretty much every mainline opening has some some dangerous, aggressive lines. At least Cochrane Gambit is played very rarely ( perhaps playable only at blitz games). I think Modern is a kind of a opening you can get quickly mated in less than 25 moves if you're not careful ( of course white has to be careful too).

I wouldn't suggest Caro- Kann if you want something really solid. While a classical mainline is solid (but can be played in aggressive way), a real thread to Caro is Advanced variation, which is very complicated. As a Caro player, I never feared Panov Attack, which I consider harmless if Black knows his stuff.

Perhaps if you want something that's really solid, but dull, I would recommend Scandinavian with Qd8. It leads to a Caro- Kann structures, in which black is very solid, but you can hardly win. Otherwise (apart from Petroff), some French lines such as Rubinstein or Fort Knox variation are very solid, but white can avoid those by playing the advance French.
