AMD server CPU 2018 Leaked: 7nm Starship With 48 Cores.

Post by Leo »

It looks like AMD is really going to provide some powerful servers from year to year. This Starship AMD should have 2 chips for a total of 96 cores. Stockfish can supposedly handle 128 cores so the more cores AMD makes the better. Intel has a 128 core server for $40,000 that in my opinion is outdated already. Especially at that price.

Stockfish is now designed to handle 512 cores and it was tested with 256 cores.

I see systems available online with 44 cores for around $5K-$6k.

Hopefully as these systems become more affordable, we will find more useful ways to use all these threads. Right now, testing I have seen for Komodo 10.4 and Stockfish 8 show them gaining only about 8-9 elo when going from 16 to 32 cores. I am sure we can find better ways to use them given time:

I was wondering if the new Xeon Phi 7290 would be good for chess. Maybe it is.

On further review it looks like Stockfish on the Xeon Phi was using 72 real cores and 288 threads.
"a single Xeon Phi can present itself as a single numa node with up to 288 threads (4 threads per hardware core).
Tested to work as expected with a Xeon Phi CPU 7230 up to 256 threads."

Here is an online price for it: Product Highlights Xeon Phi 7290 1.5 GHz Processor
