Hers is another game where Komodo seems to lose the advantage mid-way, but thanks to superior Time Management manages to win after all....

We quote results for times like 2 mins + 1 sec, now 20 seconds. The super fast time control is know to hurt Komodo more, but this does seem very strange. Perhaps some setting? I see hyperthreading was on, so the 20 second level is more like 10 or 11 second games on a non-hyperthreading core.

Mark
This time control is not 20 seconds. It is the mid level time control used on the Stockfish Testing Framework. 10 + .1 is STC, 20 + .2 is MTC, and 60 + .6 is LTC.
All engine settings were at default.
Using the additional time increment .2 lengthens the games to about 66 seconds each.
That is not a "super fast" time control on todays hardware.
I do not think anyone would call a game in 60 seconds with 0.6 seconds increment a "Long Time Control". It is faster than Blitz and is actually a very fast Bullet. Super fast time controls like that exaggerate rating differences between programs. Komodo also scales well with time, so what happens in bullet chess is not going to get you the results when playing much longer games.

if you are going to continue testing at such a fast level, you should look at Move Overhead (in Stockfish) or Overhead ms (in Komodo). You will want to reduce them since otherwise, the programs will save time since these are set different in the programs. We set ours to a level to minimize time losses for longer time controls. For fat play, you will want to reduce this otherwise it converts a game in 20 seconds + inc to a much shorter time control.

Stockfish Testing Framework considers that LTC for their testing purposes.
I will only use stock default settings as the author distributes them, as testing should be.
Experimenting with various settings is grasping at straws and very subjective.
If other settings were better all around, shame on those authors for not finding them themselves. If an engine is "designed" for longer time controls than of course it will suffer at shorter time controls.
I am running some 4+2 matches for comparison and scaling. The latest SF Dev vs K11.1 since it's only fair to test the latest release of each one...not against old ones.

Hi Paul
What you say is perfectly correct, theoretically.
It is correct with regard to Stockfish, which in any case has hardly any User-Modifiable Parameters. Any changes to defaults of the few remaining Parameters only makes Stockfish weak, as I have observed after thousands of online engine-engine Matches.
But, you are practically incorrect with regards to Komodo which has many modifiable Parameters, changes to which DOES make a difference in the playing style and strength of Komodo ( even though Mr Kaufmann says that ELO does not change).
Good or bad, even the Authors are not sure about the best Settings for Komodo.
For example, if you go through the Readme for Komodo, in the case of the Reduction Parameter, the Authors freely admit that they are not sure of the best Settings for LTC games and the Users are free to experiment ( which I have done, with positive results).
So, a practical solution should be found for this problem rather than being dogmatic and inflexible.

Sounds like a job for the authors of the software being provided..... .

Again impractical.
As far as I am aware, there is only one person in the Komodo team, who is really responsible for the development of the Engine.
To expect that one person to do everything so as to meet the exacting requirements of the Testers is a bit much.
There are thousands of people involved in Stockfish development.
Besides, Komodo would be no different from the boring Stockfish, if the Authors decided to hide all the Parameters from the Users, which they could very easily do.
Half the fun in computer chess, at least for me ( and I think for many others) is fiddling around with the Parameters in the hope of improving the Engine performance, in the particular type of games they play.

We do not know the best settings for Komodo, but we try to select settings that have tested better. Changing the settings will definitely change playing strength, some more than others. I do not recall Larry ever saying elo does not change when settings are changed. Some settings like Selectivity do not change elo by much as long as reasonable settings are used. Others like Reduction can change elo quite a lot.

We welcome reports from Komodo users when they find something that works better than default. If we can confirm their findings they make there way into Komodo, and everyone benefits.

The next two games were played using my Ryzen System, which really seems to like HT On.
In both I was using a non-zero Contempt, apart from minor changes to Reduction, Dynamism, King Safety and Selectivity....
