In correspondence chess, you are given a large fixed time to move. Typically one day, but it varies with the contests.

You can also ask for recess periods, whatever is allowed by the game rules. So, for instance, maybe 3 days off or whatever.

Losing on time just means the opponent gave up or something grave happened.

In that case more people are going to lose on time.
I guess that the main reason for losing on time is simply that at some point players lose interest in playing and simply quit correspondence chess.

I can add that I also saw cases when player continued to play obviously losing positions and lost on time when they saw that the opponent is going to give checkmate in the next move.

I think that today it is not allowed to lose on time by the ICCF rules and people who do it may find themselves out of correspondence chess for some years.
