In correspondence chess, you are given a large fixed time to move. Typically one day, but it varies with the contests.Lyudmil Tsvetkov wrote: should give them more time then.

Losing on time just means the opponent gave up or something grave happened.

I guess that the main reason for losing on time is simply that at some point players lose interest in playing and simply quit correspondence chess.

I can add that I also saw cases when player continued to play obviously losing positions and lost on time when they saw that the opponent is going to give checkmate in the next move.
I think that today it is not allowed to lose on time by the ICCF rules and people who do it may find themselves out of correspondence chess for some years.
