Re: Threadripper 1950x but StockFish 8 with low KN/s?
Hi!
I just tried asmFishW 2017-08-25 popcnt and I am at about 33'000 kn/s at starting position which I would assume is low compared to other Treadripper 1950x ?

If you expected Stockfish to do 30.000, I'd be happy with 33.000. At least that means asmFish is using about 16 cores to the max. Then you can try SMT. But don't push it to 32 it should be well below that for other processes, against overheating etc. I'd disconnect any extra power cables, who knows you will fry something if it is too much power and your warranty is void then, in all probability. I know nothing about Threadripper but just don't push it when it is doing fine as it is. It will live longer.

I hope you have fun with your new system!

Well, thanks....

If you give me your e-mail address on "private messages" I will send you my private Stockfish compile. It faster than official compile and sets number of cores automatically.

Thanks for you kind suggestion and willingness to help.
I am afaraid this would only be a short therm turn around and not fix the issue.

Sorry to read about the apparent difficulties. A suggestion, which is meant to be helpful and may already be obvious: Find a simple benchmarking scheme that can be compared to a known reliable standard. Don't worry about special compiles, GUIs, etc.Lion wrote:Well, thanks....

Get a specific version of Stockfish (or asmFish) that is compatible with your system. Run it from the command line, with nothing else open. Use the built in bench command, with some specific values chosen for hash, threads and depth. Run this several times and get an average speed. And then find someone reliable with the same cpu and have them do the identical process and compare results. Make sure your results are actually abnormal before doing anything else.
Good luck to you. I hope things all get sorted out.

just out of curiosity.. how much cache did you set? SF is a bit slow if hash size is large..
