OT - Suspicious Grandmaster Draws

Post by Norm Pollock »

Off topic but it involves computer investigation.

Here are 7 recent examples of Grandmasters playing the same moves as a recently played draw by other grandmasters. The games were detected by computer. The fact that they are all short draws infers the possibility that there could be something unethical. But it could just as likely be coincidental. I have no information about the players' intent.

The first of each pair is the original (but perhaps it was copied from a prior game). In the first two examples, only black's 24th move is different. If not for that, the first 4 games would be the same.

Actually I don't find GM draws very unethical. (also they happened in the past too, just w/o much artificial or copied move sequences due to missing huge databases, as we have them now)

Another league are supposed intentional losses! Even here there are different degrees of ethical wrongdoings imaginable, not only sth like the now (in)famous protest game of Hou Yifan.
I think of really 'bought games' for whatever reasons e.g. Norms/dividing price money with the one who needed a win in last round, etc.

Even worse are completely faked tournaments as e.g. happened in Myanmar to produce more GMs or some alleged results of Mr. Azmaiparashvili.

This post has nothing to do with computer chess, and definitely belongs to Chess Players Forum (http://talkchess.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11) IMO.
