Beginners' chess position

Post by tpoppins »

From a game in progress:
[d]r1bqn1r1/3n3k/1p1p3b/1N1Pp2p/2P1P1pP/P1QB1pP1/1R1N1P1B/R6K w - - 4 35

Cute, isn't it?

If you saw this position at some other, not computer-chess-related site, you would probably judge White to be around 1200 Elo. Yet that estimate would be about 2000 Elo off -- this is a game between top engines.

Any guesses who White is? ;)

Maybe White is SF8 and black is Komodo, or Houdini.
What's the complete pgn.

It's not a typical computer position. It seems Black played really well or White really bad, but not like computers. I see not much for White; you would like to push c5 perhaps, I don't know I'm that 1200 player , but if bxc5 you can double your rooks on the b file but the knight on b5 is terribly in the way and can't leave pawn a3 undefended.
Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

Sorry, I changed my mind. After counting the pawns I am sure black is Houdini, because I noticed on all Houdini games recently that it likes to give up pawns for piece activity.

My guesstimate:
Black-Houdini
White-Komodo

They don't want to implement the relevant knowledge in 'The Secret of Chess'.
An f2,g3 white pawns, f3-g4 black pawns, with a white bishop on g1 or h2 is penalised there severely, more than 2 full pawns.

Of the 3 top engines, Komodo indeed has the most severe problems with mobility for individual pieces, but I would be very much surprised if one of the top engines is involved in this.
The black win is simply too obvious.

No

I see no way to estimate elo of white based on the position without seeing the moves.

Mike and Chris -- good guesses, thank you.

Lyudmil could have come right out and said "Drawfish" but he preferred to be a good sport. ;)

Eelco: although White was in effect a piece down, it did have a strong clamp on the queenside -- you spotted that right. It took Houdini about 100 moves to infiltrate, neutralize, subvert and convert. Drawfish was relentlessly, ruthlessly ground down.

I used to not think much of engine games, but something like this makes you stop and take notice. Thanks to Robert Houdart for such an amazing engine.

I can't believe this is Stockfish.
I have not followed Stockfish development at all during the last months, but, if this is indeed Stockfish and you are not joking(as usual), then it has regressed a lot.

I don't know, Stockfish never has that severe problems with mobility in my games, Komodo on the other hand has, though I believed it was some weaker engine.
