Komodo updates Sub

Post by Hurnavich »

Hi,

I understand and sympathise with the past situation but business is business.

And one engine for my sub price and 158 days left after having at least 4 releases in the past does not ring home to me or i'm i the only one not pleased about the timer ticking away on the subscription.

I wonder if there will be an extension on time limit.

I suspect they are trying to pass Houdini 6, but finding it difficult

I have the feeling that the next Komodo update is coming soon !
But of course it's just a feeling.

I have a feeling aliens are among us...

Anyway, no Christmas gift....how about a Valentines Day gift for subscribers!??

I am rethinking my Komodo subscription too. If they just want to chase ELO...I and everybody else under the sun already has Stockfish.

It helps fund Larry and Mark...but I'm not getting enough in the exchange.

My main 'beef' is the same as the previous poster....but also I see people getting the 'experimental' models...while we get bupkis.

The more I think about it...the more sad I get... :(

it doesn't bother me , but I think there will be a release soon with TCEC 11 coming up, meanwhile be on the lookout for a new release of McBrain ( a Stockfish derived engine )and it won''t cost you a dime...

Code: Select all

126 rounds and 126 games completed...
Time control: 30 seconds + 1.00 seconds
Threads: 3
Hash: 128
Target completion: 02/10/18 : 13:28:34
Date: 02/10/18 : 13:12:29
126 game(s) loaded
Rank Name Rating Δ + - # Σ Σ% W L D W% =% OppR
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
   1 McBrain 9 64 POPCNT 3103 0.0 34 34 126 64.0 50.8 22 20 84 17.5 66.7 3097
   2 Stockfish 9.0 64 POPCNT 3097 5.7 34 34 126 62.0 49.2 20 22 84 15.9 66.7 3103
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Time to complete: 01:13:56
126 game(s) loaded
caveat - most all runs with less than 3 threads and shorter than a 30 second base with 1 second increment time control will test WORSE than SF-9 on a consistent basis, and the run above might have been a lucky run as well as the error bars here are quite large , but the main focus with McBrain is the access to Zipproth's opening book and some tweaking (by me and others) to use McBrain as an alternative engine in chess analysis.., naturally you are free to use McBrain in anyway you wish...

this is the type of position where you might find McBrain useful:
[d] 7k/pp2Np1p/2p2P1N/5pP1/7K/P4n2/1q3Q2/5n2 w - - 0 1

This slowdown in Elo gains should actually be a blessing in disguise - an opportunity to rethink the whole model and refocus on adding much-needed analysis features such as learning, that no one else is offering (among top engines).

Elo is not as important now that we have dozens of engines better than the human world champ, and Sfish is free anyway.

I would love agree with you. Except with S9 having Contempt it is almost like Team SF can now say, 'okay, now we are doing it to - pulled the last trick card...and look at the elo gap - you will never be able to catch us (as concerns elo).'

And while I think Team Komodo (for example) may say elo isn't so important...they admit to only making releases when they "gain enough elo".

So...those of us who are subscribers feeling all too often like we are only supporting 'tweakers' who have become programmers 'in name only'. I would LOVE for the pay-for engine guys to do more of what you say...but I don't think they have it in them.

Or, main engine?

At least it makes for one of the best "defending" engine I've ever seen. When Houdini, Komodo and Stockfish are all very excited for some side of the board, and McBrain 4 MPV4 claims all moves are 0.00, it has proven really difficult to make it change its opinion as the others' optimistic lines fall one after the other towards a 0.00 score...

I have dubbed McBrain in those cases "The Wall".

I wonder if other McBrain users are also needing to revise their opening choices, since it turns out it's a promising variations killer.
Your beliefs create your reality, so be careful what you wish for.
