The 4th Match game between LCZ and the Master dedicated unit has ended in a win for the Master. Strangely this seemed to be an exact carbon copy of game 2, until LCZ varied on move 19. Why it did this, I don't know. Presumably it was the same version as earlier today, perhaps it isn't deterministic?

Anyway, the final game of this mini-match:

[Event "4th Match Game"]

{Master played at G20, LCZ on "slow mode" (2 sec / move)}

If anyone is interested, here is some info on the Master chess computer.

I will try the match again in a week, it'll probably be closer!

Master = 4
LCZ = 0

I think it's still quite a way to the ceiling. So far it hasn't surpassed a supervised net of the same architecture yet, and it's proven that reinforcement learning nets will outperform SL nets of the same size by a significant margin.
Sorry if that's a dumb newbie question. I'm not familiar at all with NN.

But wouldn't it save a lof of time to:
* first train the net on high quality games (ie. Stockfish level)
* then you'd start with a reasonably strong net to improve with reinforced learning
Theory and practice sometimes clash. And when that happens, theory loses. Every single time.

Sorry for the newbie question here...

I completely agree, but I think some people like the appeal of discovering what's good play without any input from human experts.

I actually ran 3M Stockfish-vs-Stockfish games precisely for this purpose. I haven't had the time to do the training myself, but the file is available. If you are interested, see this thread: http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=66681

It's faster yes, but that introduces a "human" factor in how the engine behaves and it's not a real "self-learning AI".

Also, it has been proven that a 100% self-learn approach will get way stronger than a human-guided one. That was exactly the case with Alpha Go and Alpha Go Zero.

I'm broadcasting a 10-game match between LCZero Gen 20 and TSCP 1.18 with a somewhat long time control, 40/40.

There's 450+ elo difference between the 2 in 1 min + 1 sec games, but Leela scales so well with longer time controls that it is already spanking TSCP badly in the 1st game with some A0-esque moves and a rook sacrifice . Impressive!

I do not agree it has been proven and it is possible that google did not use correct human guided one.

It is not logical to me that when you start from no knowledge you get stronger and it is also not logical for me that a program needs so many games to learn obvious facts from zero.

I believe that an intelligent Human who start from zero and learn only from playing against herself(himself) does not need more than 100,000 games to understand that usually it is not a good idea to lose material so it seems to me that LCzero's learning is clearly inferior to the learning of intelligent humans and I do not understand why copy from alphazero instead of trying to do better than them.

Say what you want, but Leela is already beating the sh** out of TSCP :D
1 game is statistically meaningless...
Theory and practice sometimes clash. And when that happens, theory loses. Every single time.

Not entirely. Winning a single game shows with 95% confidence that you are not more than ~500 Elo weaker. Actually the difference should even be less if you take into account that most of the score against far stronger opponents comes from draws. (But this requires you to have an Elo model to specify draw probability.)
