Do you mean Bobby Fischer, the great Icelandic chess player with a father who was either German or Hungarian and a mother born in Switzerland?

Sorry, I had no idea Caruana was born in the USA.
He has several citizenships, and is known to be playing for different countries. Only country Fischer ever represented was USA. The same can not be said about Caruana..

Yeah, Fabiano lived for the first 12 or 13 (can't remember which offhand) years of his life in the US before his family moved to Europe for the greater chess opportunities it afforded.
If I remember correctly, even when he played for Italy he lived elsewhere in Europe (Spain and Hungary, maybe?).
He's definitely far more a product of the US than of Italy (unless you start going back multiple generations, but then most people's origins get a bit more complicated)

FYI for those who might not know - the United States joined by Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and with nearly every country in Central and South America have unrestricted birthright citizenship laws. Simply put , if you are born in the US, you are an American regardless of your father or mother's citizenship or origin. Your father could be from Mars and your mother could be from Venus and if they have a child together and he ( or she) is born in the US , he (or she) is an American.
