The bigger the net the slower and the more overfitting. The more overfitting the less it generalizes on unseen positions. Slipper should also have tried a network with a single cell first. Prune the net and retrain. Remove redundant cells/connections. I assume this has already been done of course otherwise why would you play 14 million training games on an inefficient network.

If you look here http://lczero.org/networks you'll see that what they're trialling at the moment is only training a new network every 24 hours. This means that instead of each network having ~30k self play games to learn from, it will have 200k self play games to learn from. As I type this post the count is 190,087. We will know within a few hours whether or not this approach is promising.
