The position is not logical.

How did white get 3 rooks.

The only way is to promote a pawn to a rook and I see no logical reason to promote a pawn to a rook and not to a queen except stalemate and stalemate is not relevant with so many pieces on the board.

The only way is to promote a pawn to a rook and I see no logical reason to promote a pawn to a rook and not to a queen except stalemate and stalemate is not relevant with so many pieces on the board.
There are times that underpromotion to rook is necessary to (for instance) prevent stalemate.

I do not know if such a thing was necessary in this case, but for me this is a really fun position, because it looks like all is lost for a while. And then checkmate.

Perhaps Carl Bicknell knows more about the position, but I do not think it matters very much. Sometimes, positions are composed for the pure joy of solving them. Even with bizarre formations. I believe you have posted a few yourself, regarding oddly imbalanced positions that probably "never occur in nature".

I actually see it as a feature that you can add or remove rooks to the position to make it easier or harder. Winter solved it easily with 1 rook, had serious issues with 2 rooks and I did not expect to make it with three. Fortunately I forgot to close the window it was running in, so I can say that it actually was able to solve the problem with all 3 rooks in under an hour =) I think it is a fantastic position to try out a new engine on.

The King was always a great finder of these kinds of mates. It announces Mate in 13 in about 0.3 seconds, at depth 6 with only 208041 nodes.

Some of the oldies are still really goodies.
Critter also springs to mind.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

It is also a bit humbling, considering that that specific matesearching code from Johan de Koning is probably almost as old as the CSVN. If I'm not mistaken that CSVN (Computer Schaak Vereniging Nederland) is almost 40 years old. Jubilee?

Compared to that, Critter like Stockfish is nothing but a critter :)

Kaissa can find Mate in 13 in about 5 minutes at the moment:

Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first
place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you
are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it.

The version of The King that I used was from CM9000 and written in 2002.
