An incredible effort, with massive thanks to Ronald de Man for the tablebase code and to Bojun Guo for performing the calculations on his titanic machine for five straight months.
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

any ideas ? One thing, I have noticed is that the size of the KRBNvKQN files on this site:
ftp://ftp.chessdb.cn/pub/syzygy/

are different than those this site:
http://tablebase.lichess.ovh/tables/standard/7/

with different timestamps. I suspect that may be relevant here.

Plus RAM, hard disks, mainboard... => about $70K?

Amazing that a $70K computer has completed a similar job in almost a same period (5-6 months) which Lomonosov supercomputer which is 75 tons and worth $63M (900 times more expensive)

I guess $100K.
Probably at least 1.5 TB RAM (since you cannot build the 7 man files with 1 TB). I guess $30K for that and more if he has 2TB.
The disk drives will be SAS and really expensive too. I make a wild guess of $5000 for that.
Those kind of systems tend to be overbuilt with redundant high-end everything (high speed raid cards, high speed network cards, between 2 and 4 one kilowatt or more power supplies) etc.

Anyway, I won't be buying one of those any time soon.

Recall also that the Lomonosov files are different. They compute distance to mate, rather than distance to conversion.

Now, I do not know if those calculations are more arduous or not.

Interesting. I hope he plays a match with an engine on that. Maybe the TCEC computer vs that.

63M$ figure is total BS. That "supercomputer" contains 12k X5570 CPUs that cost today like 10-15$ each. When they appeared they were like 1500$ each but this was way overpriced and could have been bought in bulk for 500$ at most.
So that was like 6m$ for CPUs. Even if everything else was another 4m$ that is still 6x lower figure than what they said it cost.
Today one could build that "supercomputer" for under 300k$.
