You are correct. It looked tactical on first sight, but Leela hardly does any tactics. Have you every tried to led her play a non-standard chess where pieces are not on the place where they are supposed to be? It's hilarious, she then is playing moves like 1... a5, 2... a4 and 3...h5

I am curious how Lc0 plays in Chess960, do you have sample pgn games?
I thought it was learning positional chess by self-play and therefore can still play decent chess even in chess960.
I told my wife that a husband is like a fine wine; he gets better with age. The next day, she locked me in the cellar.

Actually Leela needs a lot of matches in order to play with decent strength. That is more than 100 Millions. So, if you give here a position which is far away from all those positions she learned, she is weak.
Stockfish is much stronger in this aspect.

If you want I can let her play a Chess960 game against Stockfish. Do you have a special position in mind?

If that's true, isn't Leela's learning pretty much the same reinforcement learning that Michael Sherwin said it was back in 2017?

I'm quite skeptical about doing no rollouts also in late endgame.
The search needs to choose a move (out of many winning moves) that leads to a sure win.

I strongly doubt the NN can learn this for all kind of possible, and sometimes very difficult to win, endgame situations.
Is Leela using classic MCTS back-propagation or is it using a MCTS solver? A solver should provide better endgame performance.
I've just remembered that Leela is not the only one that trolls the endgames, but also Komodo MCTS - and the authors there blamed it on MCTS + syzygy TBs. So, maybe it' more of a MCTS than a NN issue with Leela, too? I wish someone would explain this well once and for all.

There is a big difference between finding any winning line and finding the "shortest" winning line. I think that is why Leela is accused of trolling so often. In a tournament game scenario, where you might have a potentially short amount of time to "think", then who cares if the move selection is a mate in 10 or a mate in 30. If you play the line correctly, you will win.
If Leela were to use Nalimov, Lomonosov (or others) which give true DTM scores, then the trolling might not be so noticeable.
I'm not sure what Leela does in it's roll-out, but If memory serves, it is a "smart" roll-out rather than a completely random one. It probably is using EGTB during that process.

Yeah, it must be primarily a search issue and TBs+DTM would really help. I suppose a specialized net like Ender can make up for some of the search issues.
I know a long win counts the same as a short win, but as I said elsewhere it is a matter of efficiency not just aesthetics to win quickly.

How about BBNNRKRQ? You'd need to play two games with colors reversed though.

And then RBNQKNBR, which is closest to "normal".
