And what is best for black now? Opinions? Do you use "Contempt" during analysis? What does Leela say?

Old books say: this is not too good compared to 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.b3. The reason is that now Black can try to block long iagonal with ...e5, immediately or on move 3. So let's try:

1.e4 c5 2.b3 e5 3.Bb2 d6

White's best try is probably 4.f4, but this looks worse than King's gambit, because Bb2 looks displaced, if black does not accept, but develops instead.

Interesting. I have checked your suggestion with stockfish and got a surprising "refutation". White doesn't move the bishop to b2 at all. Instead he plays like 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bc4 Nc6 5.d3 Be7 6.Nge2 0-0 7.0-0 d6 8.a4! and goes for a blockade on the white squares, connected with h3, f4.

Exchanging the bishop with Na5 never helps, since white recaptures dxc4! and the pressure increases. It looks rather unpleasent for black and i think he doesn't deserved that treatment before he played 2...e5.

I did not use Leela. Here is my analysis record for that position:
rnbqkbnr/pp1ppppp/8/2p5/4P3/1P6/P1PP1PPP/RNBQKBNR b KQkq - acd 36; acs 604; bm Nc6; c3 "Nc6"; ce 0; pm Nc6 {2292} d6 {1443} b6 {540} e6 {488} Nf6 {441} e5 {237} d5 {123} a6 {74} g6 {72} h5 {2} g5 {1}; pv Nc6 Bb5 d6 Nf3 e5 O-O Nf6 c3 Qb6 Bxc6+ Qxc6 d3 Be7 Bg5 h6;
Nc6 is most popular and best according to analysis.
The position is very close to perfectly even. Hence, this is a good opening for black, since equality has already been achieved.

Do you recommend a move other than Nc6?
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

2...d6 is also good and may well transpose into lines with Nc6
2...e5 is not that good for reasons given by a prior poster

So 2...Nc6 was suggested.
[d]r1bqkbnr/pp1ppppp/2n5/2p5/4P3/1P6/P1PP1PPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 1 3
With the latest stockfish, i get this line:
info depth 39 seldepth 57 multipv 1 score cp 19 nodes 11343235333 nps 3286532 hashfull 999 tbhits 2 time 3451430 pv c1b2 e7e6 g1f3 d7d5 f1b5 g8f6 e4d5 e6d5 d1e2 d8e7 b5c6 b7c6 e2e7 f8e7 e1g1 e8g8 f3e5 c8b7 f1e1 e7d6 b1c3 a8e8 c3a4 e8e7 e5f3 f8e8 b2f6 g7f6 e1e7 e8e7 c2c4 b7c8 a1c1 d5c4 c1c4 c8e6 c4c3 c5c4 b3c4 e7e8 h2h3 g8g7
Not bad, but not that attractive either, especially if black should really trade the queen
There is another move for black, that really surprised me, when stockfish presented it to me.
I'll give you some time, to come up with it on your own, if you wish to do so.

I would be very happy with black in this position , with achieving equality in just two moves.

Lc0 - note the score below is not in centipawns ,but in % of winning 0 which is how Lc0 actually tracks the positions. The analysis below shows that Lc) already thinks blacks has a slightly better than 50% chance of winning.i.e, black ( according Lc0 history) , has a 52.8% chance of winning, I have my own custom build of Lc0 that use mutlipv set to 5 , but still only displays the best move, since mutlipv analysis in Lc0 comes with very little overhead unlike A/B engines.

Code: Select all

	white viewpoint fewer / Multi-PV setting = 5 / more
exclude: none best +tail

Over the board, I would be inclined to play g6 since that is a solid move and probably more unexpected then d6 or Nc6. For CC, for me, it would be a toss up between all 3 moves, d6,g6,Nc6, Would check to see if the player has played this before and probably pick the least popular move played against the opponent among the 3 moves mentioned. I'm assuming of course you're not a member if ICCF because if you are, you just broke one of the rules. ICCF prohibits any type of human assistance

As I was posting this, I just noticed the McCain flipped over to 2. g6

left it running for some more - started flip-flopping a little bit:

just more confirmation that d6, Nc6 and g6 are all very playable here.

Sorry MikeB, I have no idea what do you think entitels you to accuse me out of the blue to be a cheater. I am not a cheater and I hate cheaters just as you do. And I certainly don't need assistance for computer analysis from anyone, since I have a computer too. Think about that!

The reason i have posted this, was that the idea that black can claim an advantage with 2...g6 was really surprising to me and i wanted to share that notion. Since you are running into the pin 3.Bb2 Nf6. You may want to consider e5-e6, Bxf6-ideas. In some lines the knight drifts to h5 after e5. And more often than not, stockfish's tiny advantages simply have evaporated if you wanted to chase them.
So i explored some lines a little bit deeper, but it even got better. Bxf6 is no idea at all and neither is e5-e6 generally. And after Bg7,0-0 the pawn e4 maybe hanging, which lures white into adventures with e5. But even on e5 the pawn can get attacked.

Currently i really think that 2...g6 is a hell lot stronger than any other move and white must think about equality, not black.
If you think otherwise, post your lines.

Calm down - I was not accusing you of any cheating. I'm sorry you took it that way. I will be more careful with my wordsmithing going forward.

PS. I like g6 a LOT!
