Depends what you mean by "tried". For the primary results, still no opening book.

1) Match vs. old version of SF.

2) AZ vs. SF + 17,= 75,- 8. It's score with TCEC openings.

At 155 win, 6 losses and 839 draws that makes alpha zero only 52 elo better then stockfish. On vastly faster hardware. That is not a huge lead over stockfish.

And that's SF8 with no opening book & no selected openings for the games.

I think they made a correction and said the new 1000 game match was with a newer version of stockfish. But +52 elo is what you can get with stockfish 11. At a much cheaper price then the hardware A0 is running.
