I have moved zero goal posts -thank you. You can rail at the moon all you like and it doesn't change that a 1 node search doesn't "solve tactics." A typical queen sacrifice tactical position will not be "solved" by looking at all of the legal moves one side can play and getting a NN opinion back. The NN will look at positions where the queen is poorly placed and notice that its pattern matching shows that this is bad 99.999% of the time. This is why it avoids simple piece loss in most positions. In the case of a queen sacrifice tactical puzzle, it will come to the wrong conclusion because it has "solved no tactics" by looking at one ply.

And if I'm "hammering" anything it is that some focus must be given to the poor search design as smarter networks will not resolve poor search design. Something that appears to be of little focus considering the response to this post and these responses stand as plenty of evidence to support that conclusion.

So we agree. I have convinced no poster that the search is inadequate and you have failed to convince me that it is and that only smarter NNs are required to fix tactical blindness.

P.S. You test 10net and post results, don't suggest I do. If you can't be bothered to provide evidence for your own assertions, I certainly won't.

Chess in essence is a positional game while shallow tactics are just shortcuts to finish a game quicker. Of course missed tactics can destroy a game in one move sometimes, but I think you have to understand than NN chess is still in its infancy and there at the moment it plays chess totally differently to what we are used to. Lc0 obviously can still see some tactics, but probably not as well as the top AB engines that have had decades to tune this part of their game. I think sorting out the tactics will eventually come either by using some hybrid AB search or some different training schemes. I do notice some weird play in the endgame where there seems to be quicker and more forceful wins, but again this will come as the program matures. Remember Lc0 is using the GPU and so far the CPU is not really involved that much. I can easily see a situation where that formula changes. The GPU doing NN and the CPU doing AB ... would seem like a match made in heaven.

I agree with everything you said 100% and I stated that NN chess is in its infancy. I think the networks are making good progress, but the search is being largely ignored because it isn't the current "sexy" thing to work on. It will get attention eventually and then the play level will skyrocket.

Funnily enough I think you chose an absolutely terrible position to claim Leela is bad at tactics.

It is to a large degree positional judgement to decide whether or not black can spend the tempi grabbing material. Imo, engines are not strong enough to see all the lines deep enough, its simply too complicated. The engines have to judge the dynamic chances for each side at some point in these lines and Leela is clearly on the materialistic side here.

mbabigian wrote: Fri Jan 25, 2019 7:35 pm Looking at positional patterns, there are certain patterns that lend themselves to tactics. This is the whole reason human players practice tactical puzzles to recognize these patterns. Steering to them or away from them depending on which side you are playing, improves play. You make a positional assessment and realize that those positions are likely to contain those types of tactics.
Wow this is quite incredible, so according to you smothered mate with Qg8+, Rxg8, Nf7#, or typical sac Bxh7+, Kxh7 Ng5+ or just plain simple fork etc. we should call them "positional" patterns? Well I guess it makes "sense" that you use "positional" patterns to solve tactical puzzles, doesn't it? (and similarly maybe one uses tactical patterns to solve positional puzzles? lol) Of course it comes down to how you define "tactics", but by any definition that is reasonable, fork can only be a tactical pattern.
Therefore: of course there are tactical patterns in chess and leela has already learned plenty of them. You can hardly have a #2 engine which is "tactically blind" - sure there may still be blindspots, but SF also has tactical blindspots where leela performs much better.

Also I guess you haven't tried your example line with antifish network? I was testing it with "AntiFish_Mark_125_1000_Steps" NN and here everything you say NN fails at it recognizes correctly. For example AF switches from f6 to a5 in ~8 seconds. And unlike SF (which evaluates f6 as even slight advantage for black at first, AF shows immediately score > 1.0, It also avoids 7. ... Bxc3 (wants Nf6 instead) doesn't play 9. Nd5 but b5. So I guess NN results depend on how well they are trained after all.

And BTW in chessbase live book 5. ... dxc4 scores 48% for black, which is the highest from all moves that have > 1000 games, so I guess you would have a hard case to prove that 5. ... dxc4 actually isn't the best move in the position. SF want's to play 5. ... c6 but what is the evidence that that isn't actually worse than dxc4? Because SF excels in closed positions? AF evaluates correctly the main line after 5. ... dxc4 as 0.4 advantage to white (after 7. ... Nf6) which is in agreement with SF, however considers c6 even worse. There may be some long term positional factors why it thinks so which maybe, just maybe SF isn't taking into consideration - or can you prove otherwise?

The original conjecture is correct.

LC0 makes a horrible tactical blunder in this opening.

In this position, Leela played the atrocious f6, which bleeding edge stockfish never considers:

LC0 is dead, dead, dead.

The other conjecture, that LC0 made worse and worse moves as the game progressed is also correct.

Here is what we do not know, however...
What network was used?
What GPU was used?
What was the time control?
Taking ideas is not a vice, it is a virtue. We have another word for this. It is called learning.
But sharing ideas is an even greater virtue. We have another word for this. It is called teaching.

LC0 makes a horrible tactical blunder in this opening.

In this position, Leela played the atrocious f6, which bleeding edge stockfish never considers:
My Lc0 only considers ...f6 for 15 seconds and then wants ...a5.

The move a5 is correct. I suspect that the network or the GPU or the time control are a little scanty in the experiment.

M ANSARI wrote: Fri Jan 25, 2019 9:03 pm Chess in essence is a positional game while shallow tactics are just shortcuts to finish a game quicker.
The basic problem with your presentation of Lc0 is that it doesn't allow for time spent on the position. If Lc0 was JUST about spotting positional patterns, there would be no difference if it looked at 1000 nodes or 1 billion. But by playing lots of rollouts these quirky moves (tactics) do get an occasional look. It's not as efficient as SF etc for tactics, but it's not non-existent.

The previous move by LC0 was also not very good, though not the horrific pratfall to come.

LC0 played Nd5, which Stockfish considers for less than one second before rejecting it.
LC0 lost around half a pawn by that choice.
