The coming explosion in AI hardware

Post by M ANSARI »

With all the interest that has been created with Lc0, I think that only gives a taste of how AI is going to change how the world works and with that ... the new explosion of hardware to fuel the advances in AI. I feel like in CPU terms this is how things were with the first 386 CPU processor. At the moment the equivalent to that is the RTX 2080Ti GPU card ... but new coming hardware will most likely really blow all this away as almost every technological behemoth becomes involved. Will the future of AI be in GPU's?? I really doubt it and most likely NNPU's, or something similar take over. Here is a very interesting read that might point to what we can expect soon

Cost is important so you need a mass-market GPU. People spend much on gaming!

Yes, but GPU's are really for gaming and for graphics. I expect AI to become quite important that AI cards that are specifically designed for NN rather than graphics, to become common. GPU's like the RTX 2080 are now just doing NN as a by product, but that can change very quickly to dedicated NN cards or AI servers with multiple AI cards.
