Sacrifice of two pawns of Lc0 opening lines on his own king

Post by Javier Ros »

This game is part of a match between Lc0 41749 on GTX1060 3 Gb of RAM against Brainfish with 2019 book (Cerebellum light Book with best move activated) on 4 cores of i7 980X, ponder on and 6 pieces syzygy tablebases at 25 minutes plus 10 seconds. The initial positions are from Balsa25Top and 50 games will be played. From the initial positions BrainFish played following Cerebellum book while Lc0 started thinking by itself.

Until now the score is the following:

Lc0_41749Cerebellum2019balsa 2019

1 Lc0_41749 +233 ½½½½½½½½½½½½½½½½1½½1½ 11.5/21
2 BrainFish_190325_x64 -233 ½½½½½½½½½½½½½½½½0½½0½ 9.5/21

The creativity in the games of Lc0 is incredible, this time it gives two pawns and opens lines on its own castling.

Lc0 started thinking after 7.Nb3 while BrainFish played with Cerebellum book until 13.c4. At that point, Lc0 played 13...a5 that was not in Cerebellum book, Hiarcs14z book or my correspondence chess database. With 14...g6 Lc0 started a maneuver that turned its bad bishop into a good one, moving it from e7 to g7. I have seen similar maneuvers of Lc0 to release the e7 bishop in other games.
After that, Lc0 gives the pawns at g5 and h5 obtaining a great positional advantage.

Wow, very deep idea. Giving up pawns to open up files for its rooks.
I remember in one training DVD that material (pawns usually) is not a priority if there's opposite colored bishops on the board.
Looks like that theory was proven to be correct by Lc0 here, but SF returned the material (with interest) to avoid K-side onslaught from black.

Thanks for sharing this game.

The positional understanding of Lc0 is outstanding, but the the serious tactical errors by Lc0 continue.

In the following game Lc0 41765 on RTX2070 against BrainFish 2019 on i7 4790S 8 cores at 15 minutes plus 3 seconds ponder off, Lc0 blunders badly.

The squares e8 and e1 are key in this game.
First 17...Na6!!, second the move 19...Qg5!! short-circuits the white position and represents very well the concept of overload of a defending piece.

I am glad you are using the cerebellum book. If lcz is edging out SF with cerebellum even while making blunders every now and than this could be the moment when lco surpasses SF.

Now I cant help but wonder how SF would do with 16 cores or more powerful hardware unless your hardware is an even match.

Do you have a program that annotates your games? For example where it would say " great move mate in 19 or better would be such and such move."?

The games were analized in the Fritz gui using 30 seconds per move. Original analysis and evaluations were preserved.
The anaconda game analyzed by Lc0, 87% coincidence in black moves.

The fast loss of Lc0 analyzed by Lc0, with time=300 seconds per move to see if the winning move 17..Na6 is evaluated correctly.
The time spent by Lc0 in each move in these analyzes was much less than the predetermined.
On the other hand, I think that the analysis of Fritz gui from the end of the game to the starting position is better used by alpha-beta engines that by NN engines.
The move was evaluated again as bad and the coincidence in black moves went up from 33% to 35% only.
