SF10 on zugzwang and lost. Engine immortal zugzwang

Post by MikeGL »

Position after 37.Bd4 of white.
[D]5r2/3b1P1r/2k1p2p/3pP1pB/p1pB4/P1P2R2/2P3P1/2K5 b - - 3 37

This position looks harmless, where Leelenstein is down an exchange (B for a R), and SF10 seems to hold with a fortress.
But exactly 12 moves from this position Leelenstein would give a beautiful zugzwang,
by first attacking h6 with Kh5! then invading b-file with Rb1 resulting to a win against the mighty SF10.

After 49.g4 of Leelenstein, black is in zugzwang because:

-Rh8 can't move due to h6 pawn falling,
-Bd7 can't move due to f8 square f7-f8(Q),
-Kc6 can't move due to Bc5 attacking f8 square again for f7-f8 push,
-Rb8 can't move because of b-file invasion with Rb1! of white.

So there are no weaknesses for black now but it is forced to move and create one weakness.
A beautiful zugzwang position against SF10 which is fatal.

It's rare to see zugzwang wins in A/B vs. A/B engines because both A/B engines can't see the zugzwang ahead.
Thats a given typical problem with A/B engines due to those null move tricks.

Game credit goes to CCC engine tourn.

Very tough positional sacrifice leading to another zugzwang and wins.
position arised after 28...Kf7 of black which looks equal but decisive due to zugzwang.
[D]5r2/p4k1p/1pb1q1pP/2p1PpQ1/2Pp1P2/3B4/P1P3P1/4R1K1 w - - 3 29
g4! is best move as played in text. This leads to a forced win for white even analyzed by SF10 on my humble machine.
It's a win due to zugzwang.

The resulting position where black is in zugzwang and must make a weak move:
[D]6r1/p4k1p/1p2q1pP/2p1P1Q1/2P2Pp1/2p2bK1/P1B5/4R3 b - - 1 33

To be fair with SF10, here's its beautiful win against Lc0 on the same tourn with a
difficult SF tactical shots with series of two different mating nets forcing Lc0 to give up many materials.

Here's probably the best draw of their match up because of material imbalance and both sides fighting hard.

Game credit goes to CCC7 Engine tourn.

Have seen from this tourn that a specific line in Pirc similar to a sicilian dragon was a forced loss for black after g4 followed by
h5 giving up two pawns for a K-side attack of white. Game shown as decisive 1-0 by Lc0.
I told my wife that a husband is like a fine wine; he gets better with age. The next day, she locked me in the cellar.

position arised after 28...Kf7 of black which looks equal but decisive due to zugzwang.

g4! is best move as played in text.

Current dev McCain will find g4 eventually in single core/thrread mode , but it does take quite a while.

Hi Mike,

I compiled your latest code last Thursday, it’s McCain-X3-dev-040619 on my RPi.

Thanks for your engine.
Looks like you have an above average hardware there.
I tried to analyze again with SF10 on my weak hardware, and the winning move was
actually 2 plies earlier. With 28.Qg5! of white forcing a win.

Tough 28.Qg5 positional win.
[D]5rk1/p6p/1pb1q1pP/2p1Pp2/2Pp1P2/3B2Q1/P1P3P1/4R1K1 w - - 1 28
Best move here would be 28.Qg5 as played in text forcing a win 1-0. All the replies of black after 28.Qg5 would lose after I analyzed with SF10 multi-pv.
I told my wife that a husband is like a fine wine; he gets better with age. The next day, she locked me in the cellar.
